7 countries with populations under 50,000 you can actually visit

Small nations often fly under the radar, overshadowed by their bigger neighbours and famous capitals. Yet some of the world’s tiniest countries pack more charm, beauty, and intrigue per square kilometre than many large nations combined. With populations under 50,000, these places offer slow travel, crowd-free streets, and a rare chance to experience cultures that have stayed remarkably preserved.
From coral islands surrounded by turquoise waters to cliffside principalities in the Alps, here are seven of the world’s smallest countries, and what makes them unforgettable for travellers.

2/8

Vatican City

The world’s smallest sovereign nation also happens to be one of its most visited. Vatican City may cover a tiny area and have a population of just 882, but it holds some of humanity’s greatest artistic and cultural masterpieces. Travellers come here to see St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the iconic Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo’s ceiling still amazes everyone who steps inside. Though it is an independent country, Vatican City sits entirely within Rome, making it extremely easy for visitors to access.

3/8

Tuvalu

With a population of just about 9,500, Tuvalu is among the world’s most remote nations. This tiny country is made up of low-lying atolls dispersed across the Pacific Ocean, and getting there is an adventure in itself — only a few flights operate each week, touching down on a runway that locals use as a community playground whenever no planes are expected. Travellers who make the journey are rewarded with pristine, crystal-clear lagoons and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else.

4/8

Nauru

Nauru is often labeled the world’s least-visited country, and that’s exactly what makes it appealing for true explorers. The island is tiny, has a population of approximately 11,600 people, is circled entirely by a 19-km coastal road, and is a wonderful destination. Travellers can explore Command Ridge, the island’s highest point with WWII relics, or wander the dramatic limestone pinnacles known as the pinnacles of Topside.

5/8

Palau

With a population of around 21,800 people, Palau feels like a slice of paradise, especially for travellers who love the underwater world. This Pacific island nation is known for its untouched coral reefs, shark sanctuaries, and the otherworldly Jellyfish Lake, where millions of golden jellyfish once floated peacefully (the lake has been gradually recovering). Palau is regularly listed among the top diving destinations on the planet.

6/8

San Marino

Perched on a mountain ridge and completely enclosed by Italy, San Marino, home to roughly 33,500 people, feels like walking into a living medieval postcard. Its narrow cobblestone streets, stone-built homes, and the striking Three Towers atop Mount Titano set an enchanting scene.

Travellers are drawn to its panoramic views over the Italian landscape, its beautifully preserved architecture, and a peaceful atmosphere rarely found in larger European cities. Though small in size, San Marino is rich in experiences, with impressive museums, cosy cafés, and charming craft boutiques waiting to be explored.

7/8

Monaco

With a population of approximately 38,300 individuals, Monaco is small in size but massive in personality. Known for its luxury yachts, casinos, and the iconic Monte-Carlo. This city-state draws travellers who want a taste of Europe’s most glamorous lifestyle. The harbour glittering with superyachts, the Grand Prix track winding through city streets, and the royal palace overlooking the Mediterranean all define this upscale micro-nation.

8/8

Liechtenstein

With a population of approximately 40,000, Liechtenstein is a paradise for mountain lovers. The country is postcard-perfect, with wooden chalets, vineyards, and the snow-dusted Alps rising dramatically in the background. Its capital, Vaduz, is home to Liechtenstein Castle, which sits proudly on a hilltop. It’s one of Europe’s safest, cleanest, and most peaceful destinations.
