5 places in India famous for the clearest night sky for stargazing

Stargazing has today become a beloved pursuit for travellers, photographers, and dreamers alike. India, with its diverse geography stretching from the high Himalayas to remote islands, offers some of the clearest and darkest skies anywhere in Asia. Whether you wish to photograph the Milky Way, catch a meteor shower, or simply marvel at constellations, these destinations promise some of the best night sky views. From the freezing cold deserts of Ladakh to the tropical shores of the Andamans, India’s stargazing destinations reveal a side of the country that’s often overlooked.
Here are five places in India famous for the clearest night sky, perfect for stargazing.

2/6

Hanle, Ladakh

Located in the cold desert of Ladakh, Hanle is more than a remote Himalayan village, it is also India’s first Dark Sky Reserve, officially recognised by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in 2023. Hanle is perched at a breathtaking 4,500 metres above sea level, and enjoys clear skies for nearly 270 nights a year. The high altitude, dry air, and near-zero light pollution create ideal conditions for stargazing and astronomical observations. The Indian Astronomical Observatory, one of the world’s highest, stands proudly here. Visitors are not allowed to enter the observatory only after prior permission. Many local homestays have started offering guided astronomy sessions, where you can gaze through telescopes or photograph star trails with expert help. The best time to visit is from May to September.

3/6

Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Spiti Valley is one of India’s best-kept secrets for stargazing. Tucked between Tibet and Himachal, this high-altitude desert sits at around 10,000 to 15,000 feet and remains largely untouched. Villages like Langza, Kibber, Komik, and Dhankar are perfect for astronomy lovers and astrophotographers. The crisp mountain air, combined with minimal pollution, makes Spiti one of the clearest observation points in the country. The best time to visit is from June to October, when the valley is still accessible by road.

4/6

Rann of Kutch, Gujarat

Few places in India feel as otherworldly as the Great Rann of Kutch, a vast white salt desert stretching endlessly under the open sky. During the day, the salt plains shimmer like glass. But after sunset, the Rann transforms into something totally incredible. The absence of light pollution, and flat topography make this region an ideal natural observatory. On a clear night, follow the constellations like Orion and Cassiopeia. Visitors can camp in luxury tents under starlit skies. The best time to visit is from November to February.

5/6

Coorg, Karnataka

Nestled amid the coffee-scented hills of Karnataka, Coorg or Kodagu offers an unexpected treat for sky-watchers. Though better known for its plantations and waterfalls, this hill station in the Western Ghats also boasts clear, pollution-free skies in its rural outskirts. One can visit quaint villages like Kakkabe, Kabbinakad, and Virajpet to get the best of the night sky. The best time to visit is from October to March, after the monsoon clouds have cleared.

6/6

Neil Island, Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Off the eastern coast of India lies Neil Island (now known as Shaheed Dweep), a tropical paradise surrounded by turquoise waters and powdery white sand beaches. What sets it apart is its pristine night sky, almost untouched by artificial lights. With minimal air and light pollution, Neil Island offers stargazers a great opportunity to observe the night sky. The best time to visit is from December to April, when skies are dry and clear.
