5 Lowest valued currencies in the world

Ever wondered what it might feel like to be a millionaire abroad, and that too just with small amounts of Indian Rupees? In some countries, even ₹500 or ₹2,000 can feel like spending lakhs, and that happens because of their low-valued currencies. While the Indian Rupee may seem modest in value, against certain currencies, it carries substantial purchasing power.

Here are some of the world’s weakest currencies according to travel agency Thomas Cook

2/6

Iranian Rial

The Iranian Rial consistently ranks as the world’s least valuable currency. As of mid‑2025, ₹1 can fetch nearly 490–500 Rials. Decades of economic sanctions, chronic inflation, and geopolitical instability have severely weakened it. Interestingly, Iran is considering replacing the Rial with the Toman, where 1 Toman equals 10 Rials, to simplify transactions and combat hyperinflation.

3/6

Vietnamese Dong

This is also one of the lowest currencies in the world. About 300 Dong equals ₹1. The government keeps it this way to make Vietnamese products cheaper for other countries to buy. This helps boost exports and brings in more foreign investment, even though the economy itself is growing steadily.

4/6

Indonesian Rupiah

The Indonesian Rupiah is among the lower-value currencies, with ₹1 equalling roughly 185–190 IDR. While Indonesia’s economy has stabilised through various policies, the currency’s value continues to be shaped by factors such as commodity prices, heavy import dependence, and fluctuations in global markets.

5/6

Laotian Kip

Laos’s currency, the Kip, is one of the weakest in the world, with ₹1 equal to around 250–260 Kip. The country’s economy is still developing and depends mostly on agriculture and hydropower. Limited infrastructure and slow growth have kept the Kip’s value low. However, this also means that Laos is a very budget-friendly destination for travelers, where your Indian Rupees can go a long way.

6/6

Guinean Franc

Even though Guinea is rich in natural resources like bauxite and iron ore, its currency, the Guinean Franc, is still very weak. Around ₹1 can get you about 100 GNF. The main reasons behind this low value are political instability and lack of proper infrastructure. So, even though the country exports valuable minerals, its economy struggles. For travelers, however, this makes Guinea an extremely affordable place to visit, offering unique experiences at a fraction of the usual cost, making it a hidden gem for adventurous explorers worldwide and beyond imagination.
