5 best destinations to visit in India before they’re inaccessible due to snow

Come peak winter, several of India’s most stunning mountain destinations prepare to transform into snow-covered wonderlands. As beautiful as it sounds and looks, sadly, heavy snowfall also means blocked roads, restricted access, and closed passes, making travel challenging or even impossible for months. For those who love clear skies, crisp mountain air, and scenic drives, and dream of visiting the iconic winter destinations of India, October to early November is the ideal window to visit these high-altitude gems before they are blanketed in snow. Don’t say we didn’t remind you - plan accordingly soon!

2/6

Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Spiti Valley, tucked between Tibet and Ladakh, is frequently called “The Middle Land” due to its location bridging two distinct cultural regions. This high-altitude desert enchants visitors with its dramatic cliffs, sparkling turquoise rivers, and ancient monasteries. In winter, heavy snowfall often blocks key passes like Kunzum La and Rohtang Pass, making the region largely inaccessible. Right now, however, the roads are open, and the clear, crisp weather provides perfect conditions for scenic road trips and stargazing beneath untouched skies.

3/6

Zanskar Valley, Ladakh

Remote, wild, and spectacularly beautiful, Zanskar Valley is one of Ladakh’s most isolated regions. During winter, the valley is cut off entirely as snow covers the high passes, leaving the frozen Zanskar River as the only link, famous for the Chadar Trek in January. Before the snow arrives, Zanskar looks stunning under the bright blue skies and golden autumn light. The landscape is marked by jagged peaks, monasteries perched on cliffs, and turquoise streams.

4/6

North Sikkim

North Sikkim is home to some of India’s highest and most ethereal landscapes. The route from Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake, one of the world’s highest lakes at 17,800 feet, is a journey through a land of frozen winds, prayer flags, and glacial beauty. But once winter sets in, this region becomes nearly inaccessible due to snow-clogged roads and freezing temperatures.

5/6

Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

High in the Eastern Himalayas, Tawang is a mesmerising mix of spirituality and scenic grandeur. The Tawang Monastery, the largest in India, overlooks mist-covered valleys and snow-capped peaks. As winter approaches, snowfall often makes the Sela Pass (13,700 ft) difficult to traverse, cutting off road access to this region. If you are planning to visit now, it will be a smooth journey and you will get a chance to experience clear mountain views.

6/6

Rohtang and Lahaul, Himachal Pradesh

Just beyond Manali, the Rohtang Pass opens the gateway to Lahaul Valley, a landscape of sweeping vistas, Buddhist monasteries, and glacier-fed rivers. However, by mid-November, Rohtang typically closes due to heavy snowfall, cutting off road access from the Kullu side. This is the perfect time to experience the valley before it slips into hibernation for winter. The Atal Tunnel offers year-round access to parts of Lahaul, but many high passes and villages become snowbound until spring.
