10 unique animals to spot inside American National Parks

Winding through thick forests, hiking up desert trails, or simply pulling over at a scenic lookout, one can never get far from the wildlife as America’s national parks are not just scenic landscapes, but also vibrant ecosystems. Be it dense forests, desert canyons, meadows, and icy alpine lakes, each park is home to unique animal species found nowhere else in the world.

Each national park is inclusive of amazing diversity with massive mammals like bison and moose, elusive big cats like mountain lions, and marine animals like sea otters that sprawl across the landscapes. Some creatures may be shy and rarely seen, while others might appear unexpectedly along a trail or riverbank.

But while visiting these areas of rich animal diversity, one must ensure to respect their space and observe them from a safe distance, which is not only important for your safety, it also helps keep these wild animals safe. Here are some unique animal hotspots from these American national parks

2/11

American bison – Yellowstone National Park

The American bison is the continent’s largest land mammal and roams freely in Yellowstone’s vast valleys. Often seen grazing in herds, these animals may seem slow, but can run at quick speeds. Visitors should admire them from a distance to avoid startling these powerful creatures in their natural habitat.

3/11

Black bear – Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Black bears are a signature species in the Smokies, commonly seen foraging in the forests. Their fur varies in colour from black to cinnamon. To prevent encounters, visitors should store food properly and watch from from away. Bears are wild animals, and keeping a safe distance ensures their safety and yours.

4/11

Sea otter – Channel Islands National Park

Sea Otters are playful and flexible and are often spotted floating in kelp beds around the Channel Islands. They use rocks to crack open shellfish while resting on their backs. Covered in thick fur for warmth, these marine mammals are a joy to watch but should be observed from a distance.

5/11

Bald eagle – Denali National Park

This scavenging beast has visible white heads and broad wingspans, and soars gracefully over Denali’s wild landscape. Often found near rivers and lakes, they hunt fish and nest in tall trees. Seeing one in flight is an unforgettable sight and a symbol of America’s natural heritage and freedom.

6/11

Mountain lion – Zion National Park

Mountain lions are shy predators that hunt in the wild, native to the rocky terrain of Zion. Rarely seen due to their precision and nocturnal habits, they still roam the park’s canyons. Hikers should stay alert, especially at dawn or dusk when these big cats are most active. Encounters are rare but always possible.

7/11

Roosevelt elk – Olympic National Park

Roosevelt elk are the largest elk species in North America and live in Olympic’s temperate rainforests. Often seen grazing in river valleys or forest openings, they’re especially heard during mating season. Their scary bugling calls echo through the trees, making them one of the park’s most unforgettable residents.

8/11

American alligator – Everglades National Park

The American alligator is a defining species of the Everglades. Commonly seen basking on riverbanks or cruising through marshy waters, they help maintain wetland ecosystems. Though seemingly calm, they are wild predators. Always observe from a safe distance and never feed them to keep both you and them safe.

9/11

Prairie dog – Badlands National Park

Prairie dogs are social rodents found throughout the grasslands of the Badlands. They live in large colonies and dig deep tunnel systems. Their constant chattering and playful antics make them fun to watch. These small but busy animals are an essential part of the park’s prairie ecosystem and charm.

10/11

Gila monster – Saguaro National Park

The Gila monster is one of the few venomous lizards in the U.S. and lives in the Sonoran Desert. With its beaded skin and slow movement, it's a rare sight. Mostly active underground, it's a reminder of the desert’s hidden wildlife. It is advised to admire from afar if you're lucky enough to see one.

11/11

Moose – Glacier National Park

Moose are giants of the forest and wetlands in Glacier National Park. They are typically solitary and often spotted near water in the early morning or late evening. Despite their size, they move quietly through thick brush. A moose sighting gives a peaceful moment for lucky visitors.
