Playwrights who shaped theatre

Modern theatre has been shaped by many bold playwrights who broke rules and norms of their time and era. These playwrights shed light on humanity, told stories of the injustices, showed the world power of love and above all they changed how stories were told. From the sophistication of Shakespeare’s language to the eccentric nature and persona of Wilde, all these iconic playwrights had one thing in common and that was their ability to beautifully tell a tale and grip their audience, which they do even today!
Here we list 5 most talented playwrights who shaped today’s theatre.

William Shakespeare

The list cannot start without the first mention going to William Shakespeare. Often hailed as the Bard of Avon, Shakespeare stands as a pillar in the area of theatre. His timeless plays, such as ‘Hamlet’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Othello’ and ‘Macbeth’, have stood the test of time and are a favourite even today. Be it in the form of books or in the form of plays, Shakespeare’s magic is above all boundaries of ‘genre’.
Shakespeare's appeal lies not only in his poetic language and dramatic flair but also in his ability to capture the beauty of the human experience. Themes of love, power, ambition, and betrayal have all been covered primarily by him and entertain audiences even today.

​Henrik Ibsen

Popularly known as the ‘Father of modern drama’, Ibsen revolutionised the theatre landscape of his time.
Through his groundbreaking plays like ‘A Doll's House’, ‘Ghosts’, and ‘Hedda Gabler’, Ibsen exposed the hypocrisies and constraints of Victorian society, challenging the prevailing norms and seeking freedom for the individual. His characters were complex, yet simple, and showed the audience and the society the everyday moral dilemmas and changing narratives and expectations.

​Ebrahim Alkazi

Ebrahum Alkazi gained to his name the title of ‘Shakespeare of India’. As a director, producer, and mentor, Alkazi championed a bold and innovative approach to theatre that blended Western techniques with Indian morals. Through his pioneering work at the National School of Drama, Alkazi and his productions left a mark on Indian theatre and how it was viewed in the country. His direction and productions were picked from all countries and genres. From classic Greek tragedies to contemporary Indian dramas, Alkazi produced them all.

​Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekov is known as the master of the modern short story and drama. Chekov’s work was phenomenal to say the least and he is celebrated for his keen observation of the human condition and his ability to capture life's subtle nuances with grace and empathy. Works such as ‘The Cherry Orchard’ and ‘Uncle Vanya’ are even taught in college classes and hailed as some of the best in history. Chekov’s work was a blend of comedy and tragedy, and also looked at the complexities of different human relationships. His characters are ordinary folks, with their normal, everyday lives which make his plays seem relatable to many.

​Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde, a witty and rebellious playwright made a lasting impact on theatre with his clever comedies and sharp social criticism. Famous works like ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ and ‘An Ideal Husband’, while did not gain much appreciation back in his time, today are praised for their clever dialogue and bold commentary on Victorian society. Wilde's plays show his sharp mind and defiance of norms, revealing the hypocrisy of polite society.
Despite facing personal hardships during the peak years of his life and then being involved in a scandal, Wilde's legacy as a playwright and cultural figure remains strong.
