Iconic artworks by Jamini Roy

In the Indian art circle, there are very few names that are as famous as that of Jamini Roy.

Jamini Roy left a legacy and a mark on the world of art, especially Indian art, with his unique style that blended together traditional Indian folk art with hints of modern elements. From showing intimate religious rituals to painting the simple joys of rural life and capturing the playful antics of animals, Roy's works did it all.
Here we mention 5 of the many beautiful paintings by Jamini Roy.

‘Three Pujarins’

In this painting, Roy paints three women engaged in puja with a very serene expression on their face. The women are portrayed with elongated figures and simple features, which is a characteristic of Roy's style influenced by Bengali folk art. The vibrant colours used by Roy, majorly the solid blue, yellow, and hints of red, with the women wearing nose rings has a sense of straight expression to them.

The women look straight at the audience, their gaze sharp and expressions calm.

'Gopini'

‘Gopini’ is an elegant portrayal of a woman who seems to be in a rather uncomfortable pose. The painting features a girl, possibly from rural India, wearing traditional looking clothes with pink alta on her hands and beautiful, round earrings. Roy's bold lines and flat colours give the painting a sense of rhythm and the figure exudes a sense of joy.

‘Santhal Mother and Child’

‘Santhal Mother and Child’ by Roy is a beautiful depiction of a mother and her child in her arms. The painting shows a Santhal woman cradling her child in her arms, surrounded by the natural beauty of the countryside. Roy's portrayal of the mother and child is filled with a sense of tenderness and warmth, capturing the intimate bond between them. The use of earthy tones and minimal details adds to the simplicity of the scene.

'Boating'

A beautiful portrait, ‘Boating’ transports viewers to the silent and calm waters of rural Bengal. The painting captures the beautiful scene of 2 men rowing the boat and three women sitting calmly inside. Roy's use of bold brushstrokes and vibrant colours brings the scene to life. The beautiful colours of blue, red and green along with the hues of beige tones fills the painting with a sense of rural realism.

‘Dual Cats with One Crayfish’

‘Dual Cats with One Crayfish’ is a playful painting by Roy that shows his whimsical side. The painting features two cats engaged in a playful struggle over a crayfish, their exaggerated forms and expressive faces adding to the sense of drama. The use of bold lines, elongated sizes and the contrasting colours that were used create a sense of struggle in the painting. The interaction between the two cats as they hold the single fish is also playful. With their cat eyes painted wide and sleek also give it a very authentic touch.
