5 paintings that are described by people as gory, disturbing, and triggering

Not all paintings feature pretty flowers, green gardens, lily ponds, or happy women enjoying life. Some are about violence, fears, and even darker messages, and these artworks make people rethink what ‘art’ really is. And these are the paintings that are termed as gory, disturbing, and triggering to the human eye. They show pain, madness, murders, and nightmares, and are just horrifying and unsettling to look at.

If art like this interests you, here are 5 paintings to see.

2/6

‘Judith Beheading Holofernes’ by Caravaggio

A painting that stands out for its raw emotions of rage is this one. ‘Judith Beheading Holofernes’ is a painting that shows a murder, and it is full of movement and drama. Judith is in the middle of slicing through Holofernes’s neck, no ounce of regret, sadness, or fear on her face, and an old maid stands just behind her, almost as if encouraging her to finish the man.

The background is totally dark with only the three characters seen in the limelight.

‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch

A painting that is often described as disturbing and unsettling is Munch’s ‘The Scream’. And what does it show? A figure, possibly a human, is dressed in a long black gown, their head bald, and they let out a scream of fear.

The person’s face looks like a skull, eyes wide, mouth open in a scream and their hands cover the sides of their head. Behind them, the sky is painted in wavy, fiery lines of red, orange, and blue, as if the world around them is slowly melting away.

4/6

‘Guernica’ by Pablo Picasso

A painting full of chaos, pain, distorted figures, and the likes, is this one by Picasso. It shows the town of Guernica after it was bombed, and it is a huge artwork with black, white, and gray tones all around. There are screaming animals, dying and trapped humans and figures, and men and women running around, screaming, and their shapes and figures are twisted to show pain and suffering.

‘The Punishment of Marsyas’ by Titian

Inverted figures, a man being skinned alive, horrifying visuals, and triggers in every point is what define this artwork. ‘The Punishment of Marsyas’ by Titian is a rather old painting that features an inverted figure who is half human and half animal, and he is shown hanging upside down from a tree. Next to him are more figures, mostly humans, who do not seem disturbed in any way, almost as if it is a punishment that ought to be given.

‘The Nightmare’ by Henry Fuseli

Your worst nightmare is shown in this painting. Imagine you are an ordinary woman, sleeping in your bed, your body deep in sleep, almost lifeless. And on top of you is sitting a demon, short but evil eyed, and you just can’t shake him off.
This painting shows a woman in a white dress, and sitting on her chest is a creepy demon-like creature with bulging eyes and a weird smile.
