Paintings by Gaganendranath

Gaganendranath Tagore, was one of the first figures in the arena of Indian modern art, along with his terrific brother Abanindranath Tagore. He was the nephew of the great poet and artist Rabindranath Tagore and left an indelible mark on the Indian art genre with his exceptional and innovative works, and his paintings had the perfect blend of modern and Indian essence.

Here we list 5 of the most beautiful paintings by Gaganendranath Tagore.

Pratima Visarjan

A beautiful painting by Gagnendranath Tagore, ‘Pratima Visarjan’ is the epitome of amazing Indian art. It captures the essence of Indian cultural practices and that too with amazing precision. ‘Pratima Visarjan’ portrays the ritualistic immersion of Maa Durga’s idol, a common practice during Durga Puja. Through bold strokes and vibrant colours, Tagore paints a sense of dynamism and spiritual energy, showing the fusion of tradition and modernity. The darkness all around with Maa Durga’s idol lighting up a part of the painting, it truly looks surreal.

Bed of Arrows

In ‘Bed of Arrows’, Tagore captures the theme of sacrifice and resilience with striking imagery and bold, geometric lines that try to tell a story. The painting shows a figure lying on a bed of arrows, with his eyes closed shut and the viewer can clearly feel the pain and suffering. The many different colours used, all of them being dull and bleak, are evidence of the suffering of the main character and gives the message of human suffering.

Morning Star

‘Morning Star’ shows Tagore's mastery of capturing ethereal beauty and celestial elements like no Indian artist had ever done before. The painting shows a soft, peaceful, and serene landscape filled with a soft glow of the morning star. With two, little humans walking on the road which glows only because of the moon above, the painting also shows Tagore's skillful use of light and shade.

Temple (Cubist)

One of the earliest cubist paintings in India was this one by Gaganendranath Tagore. Infusing the traditional Indian temple architecture with the modern aesthetics of Cubism, Tagore creates this beautiful painting. The painting has deconstructed and divided the form of a single temple and presented it in many different geometric shapes and angular lines, challenging the ‘normal’ notions of space and dimension.

Temple in the Mountains

‘Temple in the Mountains’ literally transports the audience to the majestic Indian mountains, with a lone temple on top. Tagore's painting of a temple located between tall, towering mountains shows the perfect and awe-inspiring beauty of the Himalayas. Through soft, light colours and dusky shade over the painting, it glows with a sort of beauty which isn't very easy to capture.
