Japanese singer Ado never reveals her face: Why?
Japanese singer Ado is an enigmatic name among the artists of Japan.
The famous 23-year-old J pop, is enigmatic for the fact that she has never revealed her face.
Aside from her gender and age, little is known about Ado. The singer performed in a cage dubbed the “Ado Box”.
Ado is the first female soloist to play Japan’s National Stadium with two sold-out shows in 2024 that saw more than 140,000 attendees as reported by The Straits Times.
Despite this fame and success Ado chooses to not reveal her face, creating a mysterious persona of herself among her fans. She uses an animated avatar to represent herself.
“I’m not the type to reveal myself in public. And when people don’t reveal their entire persona in public, then there’s always an element of mysteriousness involved,” the 23-year-old tells The Straits Times in a recent Zoom interview, with her camera switched off.
The reason might be a secret; from her actions someone might guess that in order to paint a psychological picture of her, in the minds of her fans, she probably prefers to be away from the limelight.
The artist had her first concert in Singapore Indoor Stadium on May 21, 2025 as a part of her Ado World Tour 2025, Hibana.
While speaking about her experience regarding her performance in Singapore, the singer says she was struck by how passionate her fans are there.
“The songs are in an entirely different language. But they must have listened to the songs a million times because they sang along as well, and it was just so much fun that time went by so swiftly”, she said.
Although, as reported by The Asahi Shimbun in March 2026, Ado has provided an insight into her personality traits in a biographical novel, “Vivarium: Ado and Me”, published by Kadokawa Corp. It was released on February 26.
The episodes featured in the novel are based on Ado’s actual experiences, the 23-year-old singer said.
In an interview with The Asahi Shimbun before the book’s release, Ado said she chose “Vivarium” as the title of the novel because it refers to an ecosystem similar to a miniature garden re-creating a natural habitat.
This actually made her remember a closet in her room where she would tuck away to record her songs.
“It was a place where I could come face to face with myself and was also a miniature garden for me,” Ado said.
“There had been several times where I wanted to tell fans about my childhood, my family and other things,” Ado said, adding that she was reluctant to talk about them in her own words.
“It would sound too dramatic if I brought myself to talk about my feelings, so I had always hoped they’d look into my past memories as they pleased.”
She started working on the novel project about three years ago.
The Tokyo-born singer initiated her career by covering songs on platforms such as YouTube and the Japanese video sharing service Niconico, gaining an immediate attraction to her layered voice and emotional delivery.
