8 birds with names that begin with the letter Z

Birds whose names begin with the letter Z are a rare and fascinating group in the avian world. From vibrant little finches to skilled aerial hunters, each of these birds carries unique traits, colours and habits. Here let’s have a look on eight of them, discovering what makes each one special - from their homes and food to their behaviour and habitats. These birds remind us how diverse nature truly is.

2/9

Zebra Finch

The Zebra Finch is a small, active bird found in Australia, with its vivid orange beak and dramatic black-and-white streaking on its chest and tail. They are easily adaptable and live well in open grasslands and semi-desert habitats. Being highly social birds, they are very strong flock birds and can be heard chirping and flying together in groups, thus able to sense predators early.

3/9

Zebra Dove

Native to Southeast Asia, the Zebra Dove has pale grey feathers with thin black stripes, particularly on its neck and wings. It is a ground-dwelling bird preferring open country with scattered bushes or gardens. They are loved for their soft cooing and peaceful nature in urban and countryside areas.

4/9

Zanzibar Red Bishop

Natives of Eastern parts of Africa, these beautiful birds display vibrant red and black colours in breeding males, whereas non-breeding males and females appear more subdued. They construct elaborate nests in wetland reeds and grasses for mating. Bright colours and active displays are a feature of their wetland environment.

5/9

Zappey's Flycatcher

Zappey's Flycatcher is a migratory songbird with smooth blue-back and pale underparts. It breeds in East Asia and winters in Southeast Asia, hunting flying insects from perch. Its long-distance migration and elegant hunting behaviour make it one of the wonders of bird enthusiasts.

6/9

Zambezi Indigobird

Zambezi Indigobird or Blue Indigobird occurs primarily in southern Africa's savannas. The males have bright indigo plumage and copy the songs of other birds. Remarkably, they tend to deposit their eggs in other species' nests and let the host birds take care of them.

7/9

Zigzag Heron

A small, cryptic heron that inhabits wetlands of Central and South America, the Zigzag Heron has showy streaked and barred feathers that have a zigzag appearance as its name implies. It stalks stealthily along water courses, snatching up prey such as fish or insects in the reeds with its long bill.

8/9

Zenaida Dove

The Zenaida Dove occurs in the Caribbean and southern USA. Soft grey-brown plumage, white wing band, and peaceful cooing call characterise it. It occurs in coastal scrub, gardens and open woodland. It is much on the ground, taking seeds and grains to eat, and it fades quietly into the background.

9/9

Zone‑tailed Hawk

The Zone-tailed Hawk is a raptor that occurs in America, often confused with a turkey vulture due to its black body and gliding habit. It employs this disguise in order to creep up on prey unsuspectingly and dive in. Its cunning hunting tactic and size make it an impressive predator of open woodlands and canyon areas.
