10 snakes that are known to lurk around backyards

A hiss or a rattle- during the summers you should be on the lookout for all such kinds of sounds. 9/11

Cottonmouth

Also known as water moccasins, cottonmouth snakes are found across the southeastern US and are identified with the white colour inside their mouths. They typically display their mouth open as a warning before an attack and are the only venomous snakes in the US that also reside in water.

10/11

Eastern Coral Snake

These snakes are recognisable from the bright bands on their scales. Commonly known as American cobra it has a neurotoxic venom that can affect the central nervous system and cause respiratory failure, paralysis and even death.

The largest reptile in the Yellowstone National Park, these snakes are non-venomous but can deliver painful bites. While rattling is a sign of their arrival, they are not rattlesnakes.
