An additional guru bead (or meru bead) marks the mala's starting and ending point and symbolizes the teacher or divine energy. The sacred count

The number 108 is linked to the structure of the universe, the human body, the Sanskrit language, and is rooted in yogic practices. If one is wondering why this number only, then one of the most significant scriptural references is found in the Muktika Upanishad, which explicitly mentions of 108 Upanishads. In yogic traditions, it is said there are 108 channels of energy or nadis that converge at the heart chakra, which is said to be the center of our spiritual awakening. While in astronomy, the distance between the Earth and Sun is approximately 108 times the diameter of the Sun. In ancient Sanskrit texts, alphabets honor this number; its 54 letters (Vowels 14 and consonants, 33-35) each have a masculine and a feminine number, that is, shiva and shakti, adding up to 108 in total
