Purana Durga Bari: The immovable goddess of Varanasi and a testament to eternal devotion

Purana Durga Bari is a temple situated in Varanasi that is devoted to the goddess Durga, also known as the great mother goddess, who is worshiped all over India. The temple is visited by pilgrims from all around the world to seek the blessings of Durga Mata. The temple is not just famous for its religious values, but it is also famous for its history and distinctive traditions. Every year, the idol of Maa Durga is installed for 10 days in various locations during the Durga Puja. After ten days or Vijayadasami, the idols are immersed in water as a mark to end the festival. Like every year, in 1767, the idols were installed here. But at the time of Visarjan(immersion), the idol did not move at all, and till date, this practice continues, as if Maa herself didn't want to leave her devotees and go away...

The magical tale of Purana Durga Bari

The idol of Goddess Durga was installed by Kali Prasanna Mukhopadhyay in 1767. Maa's divine moorti was made using traditional materials, clay, straw, bamboo, sutli and jute strings. Legend has it that in 1767 during Vijayadashami, devotees attempted to carry the idol to the ganges for immersion (visarjan), despite putting all the efforts the idol did not budge. That night, in Kali Prasanna's dream Durga Maa came herself and said that she wished to stay permanently in Kashi, from then one, the idol was not immersed. As of today, it has been around 250-260 years and this practice continues.

Rituals and festival

The temple changes especially during the period of Navratri festival, a nine-day festival to celebrate Goddess Durga. The days are occupied with special rituals being performed with enthusiasm and showmanship. The devotees fast, chant mantras, and perform aarti as a sign of respect and call for the protection and blessing of the goddess. The temple also has traditional morning and evening prayers that hold the sanctity and devotional ambiance all year round.

The immovable Goddess: Durga Maa's permanent presence

Perhaps the most fascinating thing about Purana Durga Bari is that people say the idol of Goddess Durga cannot be transferred. According to mythology, it is said that the goddess never moves from her position, no matter what. This particular attribute represents her solid protection and permanent surveillance over the believers and the city of Varanasi. This temple is a holy place where the divine energy of Durga stays put, providing unshakable benevolence and inner power to everybody who approaches her with devotion.
