From Hanuman to Ashwatthama: 8 Chiranjeevis believed to be 'hiding in plain sight' among us

In Hindu mythology, the Ashta Chiranjeevis, or the eight immortal beings, are said to continue living on Earth even during the current age, the Kali Yuga. Derived from the Sanskrit words chiran, meaning "long," and jivi, meaning "living being," these immortals are not merely eternal; they embody wisdom, virtue, and the principles of dharma (righteousness). Seen as guardians of dharma and spiritual guides for humanity, their presence reminds us that true immortality lies in devotion, following the path of righteousness, and leaving a moral legacy. Let us explore the lives of each of the eight Chiranjeevis.

2/9

Ashwatthama

Ashwatthama, the son of Guru Drona, from the Mahabharata, was cursed by Lord Krishna to wander the Earth eternally as a form of punishment for his deeds during the war. Ashwatthama continues to bear the consequences of his actions to date by roaming in desolate regions, particularly along the banks of river Naramada River, according to popular beliefs. He was born with a jewel on his forehead and was granted immunity from hunger, thirst and fatigue, making his eternal journey more remarkable and challenging. His story serves as a reminder of karma, responsibility and the consequences of one's actions

3/9

King Mahabali (Bali)

Mahabali, the noble and just king that was sent to Pataal Loka by Lord Vishnu in his Vamana avatar. Despite his banishment, he was granted blessings of returning to his people once every year, a moment that is now celebrated by us as Onam festival. His annual homecoming symbolises the enduring bond between a righteous leader and his subjects, reminding us of humility, devotion and the cyclical nature of blessings and life.

4/9

Veda Vyasa

Ved Vyasa, the sage who authored the great Mahabharata and organised the Vedas for the understanding of humanity, is still believed to remain in eternal meditation within the Himalayan caves. He is regarded as immortal and ageless; he continues as a guiding presence, a sage whose wisdom illuminates the path of dharma, inspiring generations to lead a life full of virtue, knowledge and spiritual insight.

5/9

Hanuman

Hanuman, the immortal devotee of Maryada Purshottam Lord Rama, was blessed with eternal life and is believed to dwell in mountains and forests, chanting the name of his beloved Lord Rama. Devotees often say they feel the protective presence of Hanuman, wherever Lord Rama's name is spoken, as a guardian ready to aid those who call upon him. Hanuman's unwavering devotion towards Lord Rama continues to inspire hearts, reminding humanity of the power of loyalty, faith and selfless service

6/9

Vibhishana

Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana from the epic of Ramayana, was blessed with immortality by Lord Rama. He is believed to be the eternal guardian of lanka, and he continues to uphold dharma, protecting the land from evil and guiding souls toward righteousness. His unwavering virtue and devotion is a testament to the goodness and loyalty, even in the face of darkness and adversity

7/9

Kripacharya

The revered Guru of the Kuru clan in Mahabharata, was blessed with immortality and across ages, he maintains his position as a teacher and a guide to many, sharing wisdom and preserving the eternal flame of knowledge. His presence embodies patience, loyalty and the enduring power of learning, inspiring generations to seek virtue and understanding in a world that constantly changes.

8/9

Markandeya

Markandeya, the legendary sage who was gifted with immortality, is celebrated for his unwavering devotion to the great Lord Shiva and his guardianship of sacred knowledge. Markandeya is revered as a symbol of eternal life and spiritual vitality. He continues to inspire generations to pursue devotion, wisdom and the higher truths of existence.

9/9

Parashurama

Believed to be the sixth reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, Parashurama, the warrior-sage who continues to meditate even today, as he patiently awaits the arrival of Kalki, Vishnu's final avataar, who will restore the balance and therefore will be the end to the Kali Yuga. Parashurama embodies strength, wisdom and an enduring spirit of Dharma, inspiring generations to uphold justice and virtue.
