Food for life

The phrase ‘food for life’ has different meanings for people. The simpler one being food is important for the indulgences of life and the other being how food is essential for all life force, i.e., ‘prana’, our soul. Food isn't merely sustenance for the body; it's fuel for the soul. What we consume in the face of our food choices, be it the home-cooked hearty meal or the take-out, has a great impact on our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The choices we make about what to eat influence our energy levels, clarity of mind, and even our spiritual growth. And thus, food is divided into 3 types with one of them being the best for spiritual growth.

2/6

Sattvic food

Sattvic is often referred to as something that is pure, fresh and cruelty free. Sattvic food, thus, is pure, fresh, and filled with vitality. It consists of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and dairy products. Sattvic foods are known for their lightness, clarity, and nourishing qualities. They are believed to promote happiness, mental clarity, and also help in better spiritual awareness. It is said that the sattvic food prepared is only best when it is prepared with love and care, without the use of excessive spices or stimulants. The absence of excess spice, salt or oils makes Sattvic food light, nutritious and also better for the human body.

3/6

Rajasik food

Rajasik food, as is evident by the name, was meant to be the food of the ‘Rajas’ and kings. It is stimulating and passionate in nature and was meant for those who fought wars, trained a lot and required sharp minds and skills with the occasional indulgence after conquest. Rajasik food includes spicy, salty, and overly processed foods that excite the senses and increase desires. In today’s time, Rajasik food can often lead to restlessness, agitation, and imbalance. Examples of Rajasik food today can include caffeinated beverages, spicy dishes, heavily processed foods, and overly seasoned meals. While Rajasik foods can provide temporary pleasure, they are not good for your long-term physical or spiritual health.

4/6

Tamasik food

Tamasik food is heavy, dull, and usually lacks in giving you any sort of long-term energy. Today, Tamasik food is one that is stale, processed, or filled with preservatives. Tamasik foods are believed to cloud the mind, induce lethargy, and promote negative emotions. Examples of Tamasik meals are one that include fried foods, alcohol, meat, and foods that are overly processed or preserved.

5/6

Which is the best for your spiritual journey

It is believed that among the three classifications of food, Sattvic food is the best if the person is on a spiritual journey. Sattvic food is not processed, is usually eaten raw and does not have any elements that fuel the monkey mind, rather it helps promote harmony, balance, and purity within the body and mind. Sattvic meals provide the necessary nourishment for physical health while also supporting mental clarity and spiritual awareness. In ancient times Sattvic food was the fuel of all rishis and yogis and it was a way of life rather than being a choice of meal. By consuming Sattvic foods, people can form a sense of inner peace and connection to the divine.

Which is the worst of all?

If a person is on a spiritual path or wants to be more enlightened, it is best to stay as away as possible from Tamasik food. Tamasik food is said to hinder growth and enlightenment for it induces impure indulgences and lethargy. Plus, a majority of Tamasik meals are made with cruelty which makes your spiritual path less clear. Tamasik foods weigh down the body and mind, making it difficult to access higher states of consciousness. They dull the senses, cloud the intellect, and promote negative emotions such as anger, greed, and lethargy.
