Beyond the nine-night festival of worship of the nine avatars of Goddess Durga, Hindu culture also pays homage to many lesser Goddesses, not as well-known, but who embody energy, feminity and divinity, which extends far beyond the nine nights of devotion, seeping into every area of life and belief.

Aditi – Mother of the Gods

One of the most honored and ancient goddesses of Hindu mythology, addressed as the mother of the gods (devas). Aditi is associated with boundlessness, freedom, and the infinite horizon of the sky. She is the embodiment of the boundless source from which all existence arises. Goddess Aditi, signifies both the nurturing power and spiritual freedom and her portrayal in the vedic literature portrays the huge reverence that exists for the feminine principle as being at the heart of the order of the universe.

Nirrti – Goddess of Destruction

In the Rigveda, Nirrti is depicted as dark, awe-inspiring presence that is found in the southwest direction, conventionally linked with death and inauspiciousness in Hindu cosmology. Though fearsome, she is the inescapable reminder of force of time, decay, and dissolution. She reminds us that above all, the circle of life and death will stay. What came into the world once, will also go one day.

Aranyani – Goddess of the forest

Aranyani is the ancient Goddess of forest and wilderness. Eternally described as one of the most elusive dieties in vedas, a symbol of silent strength, plenty and liberty. She lives in the forests, Aranyani represents the wild, caring and life-sustaining qualities of nature.

Ushas – Goddess of the Dawn

The vedic Goddess of dawn, worshipped in the Rigveda as one of the most glowing and popular dieties. She is the embodiment of light of day, bringing hope, rebirth and life into all beings. As she arises with every sunrise in the morning, she tries her best to banish darkness, initiating the rhythm of the day and daily activity. Ushas, the light-bringer, is worshiped in the Vedas as the shining dawn goddess. She wakes the world, representing hope, renewal, and the victory of light over darkness.

Ratri – Goddess of night

The Goddess Ratri (Goddess of night) represents calm and mystical dimensions of the night. Sanskrit for "night," Ratri is invoked in the Rigveda, where she is worshipped as a bringer of sleep, calm and safety from the evils of the world. Ratri is usually linked with sleep, dreams and spiritual contemplation.

Prithvi – The Earth Goddess

Prithvi Maa, Mother Earth, is the Hindu Goddess that represents the Earth, as the title indicates. She is one of the oldest and most revered deities in Vedic literature representing fertility, sustenance, tranquility and stability. Her relevance transcends myth into daily rituals and ecological awareness in Hindu society, where the Earth is accorded utmost respect and regarded as sacred.

Shachi – Goddess of heaven

Also referred to as Indrani, the Hindu heaven Goddess and queen of Gods. She is the wife of Indra, the God king and sovereign ruler of svarga (heaven). She is a representation of strength, courage, and the might of righteousness. Albeit overshadowed, she is a representation of God's mastery. She is included among the Ashta matrikas (eight mother goddesses), which highlights her role as a protector. Her feminine prowess and devotion have stayed committed to Indra in his own victory and tribulations.
