Sanskrit shlokas to remember

Be it to welcome the rising sun or to face the challenges of life, kids benefit a lot from the regular recitation of shlokas and mantras. These shlokas are a part of ancient wisdom that have great power in shaping the start of the day. They act as tools to drive the child towards success and a stronger mental health by providing them powerful vibrations that shape their day. They instill values, the meanings teach them lessons in life and they form a spiritual or divine connection early on in their life.
Here we list 10 sanskrit shlokas that every child must be taught.

​Gayatri Mantra

Om bhur bhuvah swaha, tatsavitur Varenyam, Bhargo devasya dhimahi, Dhiyo yo nah prachodyat.

The famous Gayatri mantra, which has also become a famous early morning school recitation, is a mantra for the powerful Sun god. It represents enlightenment and wisdom and encourages the intellectual and spiritual growth of the child, urging them to seek knowledge. With the chant of OM in the beginning, it fills the atmosphere around them with positive energy, which helps them stay active throughout the day while they seek knowledge, wisdom, and guidance.

Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshvaray, Guru Sakshat Param Brahma, Tasmayi Shri Guruve namah.

A shloka that teaches children to respect their elders and their teachers, the Guru mantra lets the children know how important teachers and guides are in their life. This mantra puts the teacher on the same level as of the divine and the gods and appreciates and acknowledges the role they have in shaping the future of the world, the kids. The mantra teaches the children to respect and honour their teachers just like they respect the divine.

Om triyambakam vajayamahe sugandhim pushti vardhanam, Urvarukamiva bandhanan, Mrityo mukshiya mamritat.

The all-powerful Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is a prayer to Lord Shiva, seeking blessings for health, long life, and liberation from fear of death and mortality. The Mahamrityunjaya mantra helps the child be free from any fears, for it is said that the correct pronunciation of the mantra and saying it with dedication and a pure heart helps people heal from pain and trauma, gives strength, and provides them with protection from any negativities.

​Sarva Mangala Mangalye

Sarva mangal mangalye, Shive sarvarth sadhike, Sharanye triyambake gauri, Narayani namostute.

A mantra dedicated to the divine mother who is the protector of all, Sarva Mangala Mangalye, is dedicated to the divine sakti (energy) Mata Parvati. Chanting this mantra helps people and children seek her blessings, for she is the one who grants auspiciousness in life, provides a sense of fulfillment, and protects from all negativities. When children chant this mantra with a pure heart and intention, it gives them a sense of security and well-being over time.

Ya Devi sarvabhuteshu, Vidya rupen samasthita, Namastasye Namastasye Namastasye Namo Nmamah.

Maa Saraswati is known as the mother of knowledge, teaching, and wisdom. She is the one who grants people intellect and helps them excel in their student lives. The Saraswati Mantra helps the children get closer to Maa Saraswati and invoke her blessings. The Saraswati mantra has the power to develop a love for learning and intellectual growth in children, which is very important in their student life.

Namastestu mahamaye, Sripithe sura pujite, Sankha chakra gada haste, Mahalakshmi namostute.

A mantra dedicated to the goddess of wealth and success, the Mahalakshmi mantra invokes the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. Maa Lakshmi is the giver of wealth and prosperity and helps students and children form a deeper connection with the goddess that helps them be successful in their future endeavours. The shloka also helps children learn the importance of financial abundance and material well-being.

Vakratunda mahakaaya, Suryakoti samprabha, Nirvighram kuru me deva, Sarva Karyeshu sarvada.

A mantra for Lord Ganesha, this helps children form a stronger connection with Ganesh ji, the one who is the remover of obstacles and helps you cross hurdles in the path. Children should chant the mantra to overcome hindrances in all endeavours.

A simple mantra that can be chanted at any time of the day, the Hare Krishna mantra is really powerful and should be taught to children early on. The Hare Krishna mantra invokes the divine energies of Lord Krishna and Rama, who are the faces of Lord Vishnu, and helps children inculcate values of spiritual growth and a connection to the divine energies.

Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya, Glaanir bhavati Bharat, Abhyutthanam adharmasya, Tadatmanam Srijaymyaham

A famous shloka from the Bhagavad Gita, this verse is evidence that divine powers come upon Earth whenever evil forces get out of hand. In the shloka, Shri Krishna tells Arjuna that to uphold right values, the importance of religion, and make sure good actions win over bad intentions, he will always protect people and defeat the evil forces. This shloka inspires children to embrace morality and righteousness in their lives.
