7 mistakes in the CV that can ruin your chances of getting a dream job

Mistakes that can cost you a job

First impression, whether you are appearing for an interview or meeting a friend, is very important. When we attend an interview, we make sure to dress well and appear perfect because we know how important it is. But this is not the first impression because your recruiter has already read your CV or resume and already have some impressions about you. So, even if your interview went well, yet chances are there that you may not bag that dream job because of the mistakes in your CV. Let’s look at some avoidable errors or hiccups that can be avoided while writing a resume.

2/8

Spelling or grammatical mistakes

Do we even need to explain why? In this age of auto-correction and spell-checks, there are people who make grammatical or spelling mistakes in a resume. Such mistakes can imply that you are either careless or do not have the required grasp over the language. None of which makes a good impression.

3/8

Tall claims

Do not fill your resume with claims you cannot prove. A lot of people tend to write about things that they might not have achieved. All lies will be caught while doing a simple background check.

4/8

Irrelevant information

Outdated or irrelevant information can give the wrong impression. For example, if you know a computer language that was there some 20 years back and you have applied for a job that requires the latest knowledge, how do you think it will help? Provide information that is valid and relevant.

5/8

Providing unprofessional email id

We all have been there and done that. When we were first bitten by the Internet bug some twenty years back, most of us had created email ids with fancy names. Something like ‘pinkpantherlady’ or ‘iambond007’ might have sounded great when you created it but if you use the same in your resume as your contact detail, you would end up being the butt of all jokes. Use email ids that sound professional and with your name in it.

6/8

Putting a mugshot

Admit it or not, many are guilty of doing this. Putting a mugshot in the resume and that too from a photo you took from your last vacation! Trust us, no one is interested in about your vacation or what a good time you had. In fact, mugshots in resumes or CVs must be avoided at all costs unless asked for it.

7/8

Using an over-decorative format

Sometimes we tend to get influenced by flowery and intricate fonts or designs and end up using the same while designing a resume. This kind of over-decorative formats can make your recruiter believe that you have a childish attitude and this might reduce your chances of getting the job.

8/8

Not providing a customized resume

No two jobs are similar. Hence not one CV can fit all. That is why it is important to customize your resume as per the job requirement. You should do proper research about the job and the organisation you are applying for and include details about your experience and qualification that matches their requirement.
