How to make lasting first impression at job interviews?

When it comes to job interviews, is first impression the last impression? Some might agree to this and others might not. But there is no harm in making an impeccable first impression at job interviews if it can give you an edge over other candidates, right? To begin with, first impressions aren't just about how you look; a lot goes into making your presence felt in front of the interviewers. In case, you are wondering how to win this game of impressing the interviewers, here are some easy to follow tips that you can use in your next interview.

2/8

Dress appropriately

While choosing a dress or attire for an interview, you need to focus on what would suit the role for which you are being interviewed. Make sure that you are neither underdressed nor overdressed. In case, you are wearing something formal, choose judiciously whether it should be Indian formal or western formal. Do not wear very strong perfume or cologne. You need to put a lot of thought into what you should wear to an interview so that you can make a good impression.

3/8

Practice how you will greet, answer the questions etc.

It's true that practice makes a man, or a woman, perfect. So, to avoid any awkwardness, which can prove to be a hurdle in making a good impression, you can practice how you would greet the interviewers or answer their questions. You can do that in front of a mirror or take the help of a family member or friend. This would also help boost your self-confidence.

4/8

Check your interviewer's profile online

Sometimes, we might find it very difficult to talk or make a point in front of a complete stranger. So, it is always a good idea to know about your interviewer, what kind of person he is, his views and beliefs etc. In today's digital world it's quite easy to know about a person. You can take the help of a professional networking site like LinkedIn to have an idea about your interviewer. So that you can talk about a common area of interest or ask the person questions that might interest him.

5/8

Learn about the organisation, the role etc.

We believe if you are going for an interview, you would definitely have a clear idea about the role you are applying for. But do not just limit your research to that. Try to find about the organisation, it's work culture, CSR programmes etc. This would help you talk about the organisation and it will also impress the interviewers to know you have sound knowledge about the place.

6/8

Pay attention to your body language

Your body language speaks volume about your attitude and confidence. To begin with, you should practice how to do a perfect handshake. A sweaty palm is a big disaster. Always carry a handkerchief and use it to wipe your hands (but do it discreetly or before entering the interview room) before shaking hands. If you are not confident about shaking hands, a 'namaste' is equally good. Do not slouch while sitting; don't be fidgety or loud while answering. Reading a little about body language would help you prepare yourself better.

7/8

Smile and be honest

A lot of times, we end up putting up a very serious face because of nervousness. It is therefore very important to answer every question with a smile because even if you end up answering it wrong, at least your smile will speak volumes about your confidence. Also, answering questions with utmost honesty is important. An interviewer can always see through your lies, which definitely would not make a good impression.

8/8

Always remember to thank your interviewer

Irrespective of how the interview went, never forget to thank the interviewer for giving you the opportunity to meet them and for giving you their time. Even if you are disappointed or know that you didn't fare well, be grateful for getting the chance to appear for the interview. Even if you failed to impress the interviewers during the interview, at least your expression of gratitude and humble nature would put a smile on their face.

Interview bias occurs when the interviewer judges a candidate not only on their skills and competencies but on unspoken (and sometimes, unconscious) criteria hence making the interview less objective. Sometimes we cannot do anything about it, but if you will be well prepared, you should overcome those biases. Over the internet you will find a lot of guides, personally I can recommend this one - net-boss org/how-to-pass-any-interview
