5 pointless arguments intelligent people avoid at all costs

Things smart people never argue about

While having high intelligence quotient (IQ) is important, in today's time and age having a high emotional quotient (EQ) is equally important. And highly intelligent and smart people understand this well. They know that not every disagreement is worth their time or energy, and so they choose to respond rather than react to challenging situations. Arguing for the sake of winning or proving a point rarely brings peace or growth. In fact, certain topics often lead to unnecessary tension, wasted time, and damaged relationships—without offering any real benefit. Here we list some pointless arguments intelligent people often avoid at all costs and why you should too:

2/6

Trying to change other people's beliefs

Whether it’s religion, politics, or personal values, arguing with others to change their core beliefs will take you nowhere. Smart people know this; they understand that these are sensitive topics and many people are quite emotional or touchy about them. Even with solid facts, people don’t change unless they’re ready. And so, intelligent people choose to accept people as they are. They respect people's differences and instead of debating they choose to shift the topics of discussion.

3/6

Correcting people on small mistakes

Smart individuals don’t feel the need to prove they’re right all the time. Instead of belitting others and pointing their mistakes, smart people overlook them and let it go. They ignore minor errors that can make conversations unpleasant and make them seem arrogant.

4/6

Arguing with others just to win or prove their point

Smart people choose their battles wisely. Instead of proving themselves right by arguing or debating with others, they choose to respond with calmness. Often, they even ignore or let go of things that don't really matter in the long run or if they can strain relationships.Intelligent people value understanding over dominance, and they know that walking away is often wiser than engaging in a senseless tug-of-war.

5/6

Debating opinions framed as facts

In today's digital and fast-paced world, misinformation often spreads faster and many people don't even know about this. They believe everything they see or hear and this shapes their opinions. When people present personal opinions as undeniable truths, it can be tempting to argue back. But intelligent people resist that urge. They understand that everyone sees the world differently, and some won’t budge no matter how logical your points are. Rather than wasting time arguing about subjective views— like taste in music, parenting styles, or lifestyle choices— they agree to disagree politely.

6/6

Fighting over the past

Intelligent people know that nothing productive comes from rehashing old arguments or reliving past mistakes. And so, they prefer to focus on solutions, growth, and the present moment instead of ruminating about the past. If the past needs to be discussed for healing or learning, they approach it calmly. Otherwise, they avoid wasting energy on what can’t be changed— and instead invest it in what can. This shows their growth mindset and positive attitude towards life.
