Why women have to work longer hours after marriage

With marriage comes a lot of responsibilities. No doubt, marriage is one of the best experiences of life but it can be quite a life-altering phase. Although the traditional idea of marriage is changing and couples are often seen challenging gender roles, yet there seems to be a disparity when it comes to the distribution of household chores between a wife and a husband.

Marriage means more work for women

A study conducted by the University of Michigan came across a shocking yet expected truth—marriage means more work for women.

3/6

Unequal distribution of responsibilities

According to the study, there is an unequal distribution of household responsibilities between a husband and wife.

4/6

Extra household responsibilities

Researchers at the University of Michigan found that after getting married, a man does an extra hour of household chores in a week whereas a woman spends seven extra hours each week. And this difference is mainly because of unequal distribution of responsibilities making a woman to do extra work which should have been otherwise done by her husband.

What married men think

Most married men disagree that they do fewer household chores but they unanimously agreed that their wives spend longer hours doing household chores.

6/6

What women think

According to most married women, marriage means more work and they need to struggle a lot to balance work and life post-marriage. The responsibilities increase manifold after childbirth since they have to be the primary caregiver.
