Simple tips to stay happy (that no one will tell you!)

Whether it is through money, a stable relationship, a loving family or robust health, we all are chasing happiness one way or the other. While the term in itself could have different connotations for different people, staying happy, at the end of the day, is something we all aspire to do, yet all of us find it so elusive to achieve. However, leaving aside the grand plans to chase happiness, some simple tips can indeed bring you immense peace of mind, that can in turn, lead to a healthier, happier you. Here they are...

2/6

Practice acceptance

Whether it is luck, or through inheritance, some people just have more than the others. This is the truth of life, that cannot be changed, come what may. Instead of putting yourself down over what you don't have, simply accept it and move on. This in no way, means that you should not be ambitious, and not work hard towards your goals, but you should practice being content with what you have, at least for now.

3/6

Stay grateful

This is easier said than done - so start off with this. Each day, start jotting down one thing that you are grateful for. It could be the luxury of running the AC in the sweltering heat, or your favorite hot meal on the table. You could also thank god for blessing you with good health, year on year. Once you start doing this, you will automatically start feeling like you have a decent life, one that is worth living (and filled with happiness!)

4/6

When in low times, wait for the storm to pass

Everyone goes through low phases in life - it could be relationship issues, career problems or financial crunch. In such a scenario, it is difficult to stay happy, and you have every reason not to. Allow yourself time to grieve/mull, and then take concrete steps to get out of that situation. Do whatever it takes to make yourself feel better, but in the interim, wait for the storm to pass. It might take some time, but it will.

5/6

Keep your friends and family close

Often we distance ourselves from our friends and family in times of crisis, thinking that we do not want to trouble them over anything. However, it is extremely important to keep them close, especially in low times. Spending time with loved ones, no matter how little, releases feel good hormones, that can in turn positively impact your mental health, in more ways than one.

6/6

Take time out for yourself

This one is a no brainer. Doing activities that you love is crucial for your mental health. And no, this does not include taking a big holiday if you can't afford to. For starters, start spending at least 30 minutes with nature everyday - this could be through a brisk walk, yoga, or anything you like. Next, nourish your body with good, wholesome food - wholegrains, vegetables, pulses and the like. Remember, your body and mind is intrinsically connected, so one cannot feel good, if the other is down and out. And of course, don't forget that piece of chocolate cake once in a while! (a little indulgence never hurt anyone)
