How is Clove used for treating different types of pet animals

A common kitchen ingredient, clove can be used much more than a flavouring ingredient. Clove also has natural medicinal and therapeutic properties due to which it is widely used not only for treating humans but also certain pet animals. Yes, you read that right! Rich in eugenol, clove is known for their anti-bacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving benefits. While clove oil and clove powder are widely used in human remedies, many pet owners and veterinarians also explore their potential benefits for animals. However, each animal responds differently to clove and so, it should be used carefully. Here we list how clove can be used in various forms for different pet animals:

2/6

Clove for dogs can help in dental and pain relief

When diluted properly, clove oil is sometimes used to ease toothaches and minor gum pain in dogs because of its natural numbing effect. Also, clove oil had antibacterial properties which can help prevent mouth and gum infections. Some pet dental products also have clove as an ingredient for providing a fresh breath. However, one should be ccareful while using it as clove oil is strong and can be harmful when used in excess quantities. So, never ue it directly or without a vet’s advice.

3/6

Clove for cats is used as tick and flea repellent

In cats, clove is often used to repell tick and fleas. However, clove oil should be used in a very diluted form in cats as they are extremely sensitive. Some natural sprays for cats also contain clove extracts combined with other essential oils.

4/6

Clove oil for euthanising sick or suffering aquarium fish

Pet fish are small and delicate, and treating them when extremly sick or old is not always possible. And so, clove oil is often used by aquarists as a humane method to euthanise sick or suffering fish. It contains eugenol, a natural anesthetic that gently induces sleep. When a few drops of diluted clove oil are added to the aquarium water, the fish becomes calm, gradually loses consciousness, and eventually passes away painlessly due to respiratory failure. This method is considered more compassionate than other alternatives because it minimises stress and visible suffering in pet fish. However, one needs to use clove oil in accurate dosage as too little may only sedate the fish. Consult a veterinary doctor for responsible use.

5/6

Clove is used for respiratory support and pest control in birds

For pet birds, clove is sometimes used in a very highly diluted form for treating their respiratory issues and as a natural pest repellent in cages. Cloves' strong aroma helps keep insects-- like mites-- away from birds. Some herbal avian remedies also have clove in it for its antimicrobial effects. However, birds are very delicate and so one should use diluted clove oil only under a vet's proper guidance.

6/6

Clove is used in small pets for treating digestive and hygiene benefits

For small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, or hamsters, clove can help in supporting digestive health and hygiene. In very mild doses, clove-infused water or herbal blends may help relieve bloating and prevent bacterial growth. However, since small animals are highly sensitive, clove should only be used sparingly and under a vet’s supervision to avoid toxicity.
