Common kitchen foods that are toxic to dogs and cats

Our pets are just like our family members, and so most people often end up offering them the food that they are eating too-- as a form of love. However, did you know that certain everyday foods in our kitchen are toxic to dogs and cats; so much so that they can even act as poison for them? From sweets and fruits to common pantry staples, several everyday items can cause vomiting, diarrhea, organ damage, or even seizures. Here we list some such food items pet owners should beware of and avoid for their beloved pets:

2/9

Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to dogs and cats. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, tremors, or seizures. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are particularly dangerous due to their higher concentrations of theobromine. Dogs are more commonly affected than cats, but both species are at risk if ingested. The severity depends on the pet’s size, the type of chocolate, and the amount eaten. Symptoms can appear within a few hours, making prompt veterinary attention crucial. Always store chocolate out of reach of pets.

3/9

Grapes and raisins

In cats and dogs, grapes and raisins can cause sudden kidney failure-- even when consumed in small quantities. The common symptoms often include vomiting, feeling lethargic, loss of appetite, and dehydration; and in extreme conditions it can even be fatal for the pets. Avoid giving grapes and raisins even as treats; do check baked goods containing them too.

4/9

Onions and garlic

Onions, garlic, chives, and leeks contain compounds that damage red blood cells in pets, which can even lead to anemia. This can happen when the vegetables are eaten raw, cooked, powdered, or in sauces. Some common symptoms may include weakness, lethargy, pale gums, and difficulty in breathing.

5/9

Avocados

Avocados contain persin, which is a fungicidal toxin that can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs and cats. While the flesh is less toxic than the pit, skin, or leaves, large amounts of avocado can still be harmful for pets. The pit poses a choking hazard, and ingestion can also lead to intestinal blockage.

6/9

Alcohol

Consuming even small amounts of alcohol, is highly toxic to cats and dogs. Alcohol depresses the nervous system, and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, coordination problems, difficulty breathing. When consumed in large amounts it can also lead to coma or death. Fermented foods like bread dough that contain alcohol can also be dangerous to dogs and cats.

7/9

Xylitol

Xylitol is a sugar substitute which is found in sugar-free gum, candies, baked goods, and even some peanut butters. Eating even small amounts of xylitol can rapidly release insulin in dogs; this can cause dangerous drop in blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), seizures, liver failure, and even death in extreme cases. Cats are less commonly affected with xylitol, but it should be avoid for them too.

8/9

Macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts are highly toxic to dogs. Eating them can cause weakness, vomiting, and even hyperthermia (rise in body temperature). Even small amounts can trigger symptoms within 12 hours of ingestion. Cats are less commonly affected but should still avoid these nuts.

9/9

Coffee, tea, and caffeine

Caffeine which is commonly found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, or chocolate can overstimulate cats and dogs' nervous and cardiovascular systems. And so, when consumed caffeine they can experience restlessness, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, or even seizures.
