Aquarium fishes that can live for decades

Keeping fishes as pets is a calming and rewarding experience. While many popular aquarium fishes live only for a few years, did you know that there are certain species that can live for decades? Yes, you read that right! From Goldfish to Koi fish, certain freshwater and marine fishes are known for their incredibly long lifespans. In fact, a few species have also lived for nearly 50, 100, or even close to 200 years under ideal conditions! Here we list some such fish longest living aquarium fish:

Goldfish – Lifespan: 10 to 40 years

One of the most common pet fish, the goldfish can live for 10 to even 40 years under good care! Apart from good and nutritious diet, goldfish neeed spacious, filtered aquariums or ponds to have a happy, healthy, and long life. Surprisingly, the oldest recorded goldfish lived to 43!

Koi Fish – Lifespan: 25 to 200 years

Koi fish are commonly kept in ponds, and they are known for their long lives. While most Koi fish live for 25–40 years, some have lived even longer too. They need a spacious pond, clean water and nutritious diet to live for decades. The most famous koi fish, “Hanako,” reportedly lived for 226 years, confirmed by testing her scales!

Sturgeon – Lifespan: 50 to 100+ years

While not a typical home aquarium fish, some Sturgeon species like beluga and lake sturgeon are kept in large tanks or ponds. They can grow huge in size and live for more than 100 years! These fish have prehistoric lineage and are known for their calm nature.

Clown Loach – Lifespan: 15 to 25 years

Clown loaches are vibrant, playful fish and they can live for decades in well-maintained aquariums. Contrary to common beliefs, Clown loaches can live for 15 to 25 years with proper care. Clown Loaches are social and so, they should be kept in groups. They are also a bit shy; they love hiding spaces and gentle currents in the aquarium.

Freshwater Angelfish – Lifespan: 10 to 15 years

Freshwater angelfish are elegant and popular pets for home aquariums. These graceful fishes should be kept in a group and big aqauriums with real water plants. They are intelligent fishes and they are known to bond with their tank mates; they can even recognise their owners over time. With good and consistent water conditions and a balanced diet, Angelfish can live up to 15 years.

Oscar Fish – Lifespan: 10 to 20 years

Oscars are highly intelligent, and interactive fish-- they are known to recognise their owners and even beg for food! While often sold when small, Oscar fish can grow large and so they need big aquariums to swim around freely. They can live up to 20 years in spacious, well-filtered tanks. They require a protein-rich diet and good water conditions for a healthy and long life.

Plecostomus (Pleco) – Lifespan: 10 to 20+ years

Plecos are known for eating algae, and hence are usually kept as tank cleaning pets. They are low-maintenance fish but some varieties - like the common pleco, need big tanks to move around freely. These hardy fish can live upto 20 years, depending on the species and care provided to them.

Discus Fish – Lifespan: 10 to 15 years

The "kings" of freshwater aquariums, Discus fish are known for their stunning looks. With stable warm temperatures and clear water, they can live close to 10 to 15 years. They are sensitive to water changes, so consistency and good quality food are key to their longevity.

African Cichlids – Lifespan: 10 to 15 years

African Cichlids are colourful and full of personality, and those from Lake Malawi or Tanganyika can live for 10 years or more. Their lifespan depends on diet, water hardness, and social dynamics. African Cichlids are pets for experienced aquarists who like active, and behaviour-rich tanks.

Betta Fish - Lifespan: 5 to 10 years

While Betta Fish usually live for 2-4 years, under special conditions-- like consistent good water conditions, nutritious diet, and spacious and well-planted tank-- they can live for 5 to 10 years too! Due to their long, beautiful tail and fins, Betta fish are slow swimmers and they so they need gentle filters in their tanks. Some long-living bettas have been raised by expert breeders in optimal environments.
