Tips to defend your spouse publicly

While Will Smith defending his wife Jada Pinkett Smith publicly is being lauded by many, netizens are divided on the way he handled it. Him slapping Chris Rock, being violent was an unscripted move that shook everyone. What do you think, was it the right way to go about it? As the debate continues, we bring you some do’s and don’ts of defending your spouse in public.

2/3

Do’s

Set boundaries

If you know that some people can hurt your spouse, it is best to set boundaries before any incident happens. Be it your kids, friends, cousins, parents and even neighbours, draw that line. You cannot control people but you can make changes in the kind of people you hang out with. In case of your children, a crisp red line is important.

Ask your partner

Talk to your partner, have a proper serious conversation as to how they would want you to stand up for them.

3/3

Don’ts

You don’t have to get aggressive

Unless the situation compels you because there is no other way to deal with it, there is no need to get violent. You cannot control someone’s mouth. Tell the person later that he/she hurt your spouse and it was offensive and make sure that person apologises in public. If you become violent for defending your spouse, it is still you who will look wrong.

Never correct your spouse in public

No matter what, always remember the golden rule. You must always defend your spouse in public but correct him/her in private. If you correct them in front of everyone, you are not only humiliating your partner, you are also degrading your own impression in public.
