Here's the best pieces of advice you've heard about breakups

Handling a breakup isn’t easy. For some, it sails smoothly while for others, their heart literally gets broken. Going past the grief stage is a huge obstacle, let alone moving on from the relationship and the partner. Things can get incredibly disheartening. But once in a while, you may come across a piece of advice that has the power to change situations and help you get a better perspective on life. We bring to you 6 people who shared the best piece of breakup advice that they came across.

Being the one who’s hurt more

“This one time I was going through a very rough breakup and I hated the fact that I was the one who expressed pain more than my ex. But I didn’t know this until they pointed out the fact that it was quite okay to be the one who was hurting more. It only meant that I loved with all my heart and that was the most important thing. This helped me a lot to move on.”

Mourning with binge-eating is not okay

“I used to feel irritated by listening to my big brother complain about me not exercising. He’s quite annoying sometimes. But once when I was going through a breakup, he helped me the most. He said me wasting my time and self-worth by eating junk all the time, and watching sappy movies to get over the breakup wouldn’t help. It didn’t. But his advice did. I am back on my feet now!”

Hetanshi, 25 years old

Keeping yourself first

“I needed to know from someone how important it is to keep yourself first in relationships. Even during a breakup, it is really necessary to keep yourself above because you will be there for yourself, nobody else will. This is what my ex taught me when we broke up. The best piece of advice that I have received ever.”

Crying is no shame

“I used to believe that crying is for the weak-hearted. But my mom, my biggest support system, told me that there’s only strength in crying. It is a way to relieve yourself of your grief and get the power to stand up again and become even stronger than before. And so, I cried. I cried so much after my breakup that there were no tears left to waste anymore.”

Rishika, 34 years old

It’s okay to take time

“Surprisingly my colleague helped me move on from my breakup when I was unable to get any work done at all. Things had become so worrisome that she had to step up. But instead, she told me to take some time to myself. She advised me to take my time to grieve and not rush in order to move on. You’ll never move on completely until you take time to grieve completely—this is what she said. And now, I am engaged to someone I really love. All credit goes to my colleague who helped me to move on.”

Rishabh, 34 years old

Talking to exes will do you no good

“My best friend forced me to block my ex from all my social media platforms and also delete his number right away. I cried at that time but now I am so thankful to him because if he had not done that, I would have still been crying for my ex who’s long married to someone now. Guess, that’s what best friends are for.”

Varun, 29 year old
