Life after marriage

Post-marriage our world changes and this emotion can be understood only by those who have tied the nuptial bonds. In a light hearted post, actor Varun Dhawan, who married his longtime love Natasha Dalal in 2021, wrote that “Aap logo ne Iss din Hume itna pyaar diya thank u ❤️ but I need your blessings again kyunki shaadi ke baad sab badal jaata hai!” Just like Varun, all couples experience change in some or the other way. We asked some couples to share their stories, how life changed for them post-marriage and here is what they shared with us.

2/8

“I prioritise our finances now”

Earlier we lived like college students who would splurge on getting each other expensive gifts and what not. But now my entire focus is how can I make more money so that our future is secured. My wife is a homemaker, she was always clear that working in an office was not for her. I know I am making enough money but in my job, pension will never be a part of it. My wife often points out that I have become a bit frugal when it comes to gifting, spending on home decor etc.

3/8

“I find myself cooking all the time”

Before marriage, my mom used to do the cooking. I would get everything on the bed, the work table, in front of the TV, but now I am the one doing all of that for my in-laws and husband.

4/8

“I have become more patient”

Ever since I married the love of my life, I have become a lot more patient. My wife is a short tempered woman but she had a disturbed childhood so I know where she is coming from. Living together 24x7 with her has changed many perceptions and I have become more patient today.

5/8

“I feel more independent after marriage”

Generally people say your wings are clipped after marriage but I have funnily and interestingly, have become more independent. Earlier, with my parents, I felt more bound to some unsaid rules and post-wedding, all the rules disappeared. I feel blessed.

6/8

“I feel a sense of belonging now”

I have been brought up by strict parents so it was mostly like military rule. Everything had a system, hugging was rare, expressing love and emotion was was seen as awkward, although they have always loved me. Post-marriage, my in-laws have been trying to help me shed that unnecessary stress of being perfect. They care about me in a way my parents did not. I feel I belong here now. I feel loved in a true sense.

7/8

“We fight like cats and dogs”

We fight a lot because we both are headstrong personalities. We end up together at the end of the day but our fights scare the people around us. This was not there when we were seeing each other for 5 years before we got married.

8/8

“We now adjust in ways we never thought would happen”

Using the toilet seat to keeping the room clean to getting small things done in the house, both of us have suddenly grown up! Earlier, for both of us, there was someone who would do our tasks for us but now since we have to do it on our own, we feel maturity has set in and we laugh at ourselves, at the kind of people we were.
