The pros and cons of marrying without dating

For ages, arranged marriages have been the norm, especially in the Indian set-up. Children of marriageable age are introduced to one another in the presence of their families and only get to know each other through small interactions. Such couples await their ‘dating phase’ to actually start right after their marriage, i.e the honeymoon phase. Every couple’s journey weighs differently. In account of this, we bring to you the pros and cons of couples marrying without dating each other.

2/11

Pros of marrying without dating

Those who trust their parents’ decision to marry them off to a respected and good family, have no problems in adjusting to someone unfamiliar. Such couples hold a very high regard for principles, religion and ethics and tend to have a firmer and calm personality. They trust the decision of their elders and quickly learn to adjust to their new environment.

3/11

Focus on present and future

As we all know, the past does not hold high importance in love, life and relationships because the present and the future is all that matters. So, if you don’t know the person you are about to marry, you can always focus on getting to know them better in the future.

4/11

Increased social status

Parents always look for brides and grooms who belong to a well-to-do family and are from a respectable background. Marrying into a family with high social status ensures a quality life for the newlywed couples and the generations to come.

5/11

Cultural similarities

In India, cultures and religions play a huge role in determining the appropriate individual for marriage. Marrying people with similar values and cultural beliefs makes it easier for couples to adjust to their new families and society. This prevents any such related conflicts in the long run.

6/11

Rational decisions

Arranged marriages are considered to be rational decisions instead of emotional ones. In such an instance, people are able to evaluate all factors including those of danger and see the decision to marry from an objective point.

7/11

Cons of marrying without dating

Every person wants to know their partner before they say the ‘big yes’. Once married, it is difficult to change the decision as it involves emotional wreckage for the couple, their families, and also, negative societal standards that look down on divorcees. Couples always prefer to date for a year or so, before they pop the question to each other. So, here are some of the risks of marrying without dating.

8/11

Not fitting well together

Due to the lack of time, such married couples do not get to know each other, and often later find out that they both are not really compatible together. This leads to serious disputes and fights. Even so, some while later, people just subject to their partner’s wishes to avoid arguments.

9/11

Lack of trust in the beginning

Couples who do not know each other at all, when getting married, face issues regarding trust. The significant lack of trust in newlyweds can get quite difficult, which may cause problems in the future. Mistrust and blurry communication are one of the leading causes of divorces among couples.

10/11

Family problems

The lack of proper communication and trust between partners plays a huge disadvantage among their families as well, since disputes between the couples turn into the entire household dispute in no time. In-laws tend to interfere in marital problems that can slowly turn toxic in the long run.

11/11

No personal choices

Most of the time, people don’t have a say in their own marriage, even though personal choice regarding marriage is considered to be a human right. Elders and parents have the upper hand in such marriages. The chosen couple will have no choice but to accept the marriage proposal, even though they are not attracted to the opposite person at all.
