Rights that Indian unmarried couples should know about

In India, unmarried couples are often ‘haww-ed’ and we all fail to understand why because as adults everyone is free to choose who they want to be with. But we have some self pronounced “authorities” and self-acclaimed 'society guardians' who try to monitor our lives because they probably are jealous deep within or simply need “masala” in their lives. So, here are a few rules all Indian unmarried couples should be aware of before anyone questions you!

2/6

You can stay in a hotel without fear

So what if you are unmarried? As long as you are adults, you are free to stay in any hotel together. There is no law that restricts you! However, in our country there are many hotels and homestays that do not allow it.

3/6

You can rent a house

When you rent an apartment as an unmarried couple, just keep in mind that the agreement is on both your names. There is no law that does not allow unmarried couples to take up a place at all.

4/6

Police cannot arrest you

You are an adult with valid IDs then no police personnel can arrest you if you are together in a hotel room with mutual consent.

5/6

Sit anywhere

You can sit anywhere in a public place as an unmarried couple. Yes there is a section 294 of IPC which states that if there is any “obscene act” in public then you shall be punished with 3 months of imprisonment but it is misused by police a lot. The police cannot arrest you if you are just taking a walk together or sitting in some place together.

6/6

Protection act against abusive relationships

In case you are in an abusive relationship and are in a live-in, according to The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, it is your right to get protection.
