Myths about virginity: Things that are often misunderstood about losing virginity

Several myths and facts surrounding virginity have been conceptualised for ages, after carefully examining the human body. It’s not just about someone who hasn’t had penetrative sex, but a lot more. People consider the former group of people as virgins and if otherwise, a non-virgin. Virginity is far more complexed and subjective. In fact, there are several misunderstandings and misconceptions that surround virginity because of lack of sex education. To help you understand more, here are some things that people commonly misunderstand about virginity.

2/6

Your first time will be painful

It is normally assumed that when women have penetrative sex for the first time, it will be very painful due to the breakage of the hymen. Additionally, there will also be bleeding that signifies the loss of virginity in some communities. Truth be told, not all woman go through a painful process nor do they bleed when they have sex for the first time. The hymen is very stretchy which can prevent intense pain for some.

3/6

Any kind of penetration can take away your virginity

It’s widely believed that masturbation and usage of tampons also take away your virginity as it may stretch the hymen. In this case, virginity is very subjective. But, usually, virginity is about having the entire sexual experience including the most essential of all-sexual penetration. Hence, any kind of vaginal insertion doesn’t mean you’ve lost your virginity.

4/6

A gynaecologist can determine your status

It is highly believed that professionals or gynaecologists can determine whether you have had sex or not. But there is no physical examination that can determine a woman’s virginity status just by examining the hymen because it itself is not an indication of virginity.

5/6

Your partner can tell your sexual/virginity status

Sometimes, both men and women tend to worry that their current partner can tell if they are a virgin or not. But in all honesty, your hymen doesn’t reveal your virginity nor can your partner actually determine if you’ve had sex before or not. However, talking to your partner about your sexual history can build greater intimacy and trust between one another.

6/6

After losing your virginity, sex is no big deal

It’s the modern age belief that once you lose your virginity, sex shouldn’t matter much. This isn’t true. No matter how many times you have had sex, it should always be a well-thought decision because sex is the purest form of physical intimacy that connects two souls and their bodies together. If you’ve lost your virginity, it doesn’t mean you have to be up for sex all the time. Indulge in it, when you really want to.
