Did PDA go too far for them?

A news recently surfaced on the Internet that has caught many netizens’ attention, of a man being thrashed by people for allegedly kissing his wife while bathing in Saryu river, in Ayodhya. People around the couple hurled abusive words and yelled at them for engaging in such an act before families. They dragged the man out of the river and began beating him for kissing his wife in the holy river. People have been sharing mixed reactions for the same; some were seen calling out the couple for ‘such demeaning behaviour’ while others were calling out the people who thrashed the man, calling them ‘stone-age people who can’t accept kissing.’

This incident sheds light on how PDA is still a very debatable concept in India. Some sections of the society are welcoming change while others still resent any form of PDA in public. Let’s take a look at why PDA is still disregarded in India.

Thrashed for kissing in public

Most people cannot tolerate watching couples kiss in public places. They start demeaning the couple, and they eventually end up thrashing or lynching the man. There have been many incidents where couples have been physically and verbally harassed for engaging in PDA.

Famous incident that’s an example of unwelcomed PDA

In 2018, a couple in a metro station in Kolkata were harassed for ‘standing too close’ to one another. They were thrown out of the train and the man was beaten by other men. This sort of lynching is quite common in other parts of India as well.

Traditional values stop people from engaging in PDA

Traditional Indian values and morals strongly look down upon people who hug and kiss in front of others. Many people frown upon the youth who are more open to the idea of embracing love as it is. People believe that the act of showing affection between couples should happen only privately.

The debate of whether mere PDA is punishable or not, continues in India as the youth and current generation are becoming more accepting of embracing love, out in the public. But if that makes others uncomfortable, then? Your thoughts?

There is a difference between public place and place of worship. No one would have hurt him/her if they kissed at a public place and not place of worship. Do not treat others patience as your freedom to do anything you like
