Significance of Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth has more than one aspect. It is both social and spiritual, but women practice it for different reasons. It is a way for wives to offer their prayers and devotion to their husbands and pray for their well-being. It is also a celebration of togetherness and bonding among married women who celebrate this festival by performing the rituals, fasting, and singing folk songs together.

Important Rituals of Karwa Chauth

  1. Sargi

The day begins with a pre-dawn meal called Sargi, which is prepared by the mother-in-law. It is a nourishing meal to sustain women through the day-long fast. Sargi typically includes foods like fruits, sweets, nuts, and parathas, along with a glass of water or milk.

  1. The day-long fast

From dawn till dusk, women neither take meals nor do they even drink water during their fast on Karwa Chauth. Many of them meet later in the day for a group prayer and to share stories or songs associated with Karwa Chauth, all of which help in creating a strong bond and celebrating the festival together.

  1. The Karwa (Clay Pot)

The most significant thing about going through the Karwa Chauth rituals is the Karwa, which is a small embellished earthen-shaped pot used for offerings which is done in the evening. This pot contains water which in turn represents the act of praying for a long life for the husband.

  1. Evening prayer and Moon sighting

In the evening when the moon has risen, women do the puja wherein, they look at the moon through a strainer or a piece of cloth and pray to the Moon.

  1. Breaking the fast

In most cultures, it is the responsibility of the provider of the home- the husband, to break the fast, usually with a glass of water or in some cases, sweet treats. This particular moment represents the gentle displays of affection between the couple. Many husbands also give a gift to their wives expressing their love for them.
