How to handle someone crying, over the phone

When someone cries in front of you, your instant reaction is to hug them or hand then a handkerchief, wipe the tears, just hold the hand and let them take it out etc. But the situation gets difficult to handle when the sobbing is over the phone. You tend to feel helpless as well in the comforting department. So to deal with such a situation, here are some tips that might help.

2/5

Attention

This is the most important thing. A person who trusts you enough to cry in front of you even if on the phone, requires your attention. Listen to them, Go to a quiet place where you can give them undivided attention. Let her or him release it all out and don’t interrupt. Reassure them and tell them that you are there for them. However, Don’t say “sab theek hojaayega”, it is a very fake and annoying line frankly.

3/5

Open the closed bottle

If the person crying is someone who bottles up a lot, then coax her or him to open up. Let them know that you can be trusted (do live upto that) and tell them that they will feel a lot lighter after talking about it. Be patient but yes do not pressurise them either. Just give them the comfort that they can talk whenever they are ready and you will be there.

4/5

The coax is important

At times, the person may be ready to tell but they need a bit of encouragement or coaxing from you. They just require you to say” tell me what happened”, “I am there so tell me”, “I am all ears”, etc.

5/5

Texting

After the phone call, send her or him a message that hey I am there, never feel alone etc. Keep a check on the person from time to time if they are fine. Ask them out for an ice cream or his or his comfort food, just make sure you let them know you are there.
