How do romance novels affect real-life relationships

Here is what happens

We all have at one point in time believed in the fairytale love stories that we read. Whether it is romanticising the pain of ‘judai’ in love or the heated intimacy, novels laid a foundation plan in our heads about how love looks. However, romance novels can have positive and negative impacts on real-life relationships, depending on how individuals perceive and interpret them. Here are some ways in which romance novels may affect real-life relationships just like Korean dramas have.

2/7

Unrealistic expectations

Romance novels often depict idealised relationships with perfect partners and extravagant gestures. Readers often tend to develop unrealistic expectations about love, romance, and relationships, which can lead to dissatisfaction in their own real-life relationships. In real life, there are complexities and imperfections which may or may not be portrayed in novels.

3/7

Escapism

Romance novels encourage escapism from everyday life which allows readers to immerse themselves in a fantasy world of passion and excitement. This can be entertaining and enjoyable, but when there is excessive reliance on such escapism, it often leads to dissatisfaction with real-life relationships because they tend to appear mundane in comparison.

4/7

Emotional connection

When we read romance novels it evokes strong emotions and creates a sense of emotional connection with the characters. This heightened emotional experience often makes the reader desire similar intensity and passion in their real-life relationships. We forget that the book has everything exaggerated for dramatic effect.

5/7

Inspiration

Romance novels inspire and give ideas to couples looking to add romance and spice to their relationships. They may spark creativity and encourage individuals to express their love in unique ways. However, it is important that we differentiate between healthy inspiration and unrealistic expectations that could strain relationships if one partner cannot meet those expectations.

6/7

Communication

Well-written romance novels explore the complexities of relationships, emotions, and communication. They can also make you practice effective communication strategies, emotional intelligence, and understanding one another's needs. This can potentially enhance real-life relationships by promoting better communication and empathy.

7/7

Enhanced intimacy

Romance novels have detailed descriptions of physical intimacy. This can create unrealistic expectations, but on the upside, it can also provide an opportunity for individuals to explore their desires and learn about different aspects of intimacy. However, it is important to approach these depictions with a critical eye and realise that real-life intimacy is unique to each couple and it all should be based on consent and comfort.
