Chakra awakening with Holi colours

The festivities of Holi begin days prior to the actual day and continue to be celebrated days after, all over India. The celebrations are also associated with colour and pathways to spirituality by some people. When we speak of spirituality, our chakras are also affected by the colours amongst many other elements. The energy that flows through our body nourishes us emotionally and physically. So, here is a low down on ways to balance and align each chakra from the lowest to top by mixing and using organic colours, herbs and essential oils in your water drums or colour.

Root chakra (muladhara)

Colour: Red


Essential oil: Patchouli, cedarwood, vetiver


Herbs/food: Beetroot, apple, pomegranate


Physical sign: Constipation, lower back, prostate, bones, fatigue


The first chakra which is located at the bottom of the pelvis and in the center of your perineal area, often experiences the most amount of blockage or weakness. It represents our foundation and feeling of being grounded, sexuality, safety, security and survival instinct.

Sacral chakra ( svadhishthana)

Color: Orange


Essential oil: Tangerine, ylang-ylang , jasmine, neroli


Herbs/food: Seeds, nuts, orange, carrots, pumpkin.


Physical sign: Lower abdomen, UTI, colon, reproductive Issue


This chakra is located a few inches below the belly button. It influences our emotions and creativity. It's identified with the colour orange and affects our views on intimacy, boundaries and trust.

Solar plexus chakra (manipura)

Color: Yellow


Essential oil: Zen, Lemon, grapefruit, neroli


Herbs/food: Yellow pepper, yellow lentil, squash, bananas


Physical sign: Digestive, low BP, sugar, liver, pancreas, gallbladder


The third chakra is situated in the upper belly at the diaphragm. Its colour is yellow and it guides our will and emotions. It is also responsible for our energy, personal power and issues related to ego.

Heart chakra (anahata)

Color: Green


Essential oil: Cardamom, frankincense, rose, chamomile, tea tree


Herbs/food: broccoli, kale, Leafy greens, peas.


Physical sign: Heart related, lungs


It should be no surprise that the heart chakra is located right in the middle of your chest. This chakra helps us experience unconditional love, guides our relationships and influences our ability to demonstrate compassion and hope. Green is the colour of the heart chakra.

Throat chakra (vishuddha)

Color: Blue


Essential oil: Lavender, peppermint, jasmine


Herbs/food: Blueberries, figs, herbal teas, honey.


Physical sign: Thyroid, throat related, tonsils, neck-shoulder


The fourth chakra exists in your throat and is associated with the colour blue. It assists in our ability to speak our truth. It also governs our ability to be a good communicator, which includes listening and understanding others.

Third eye (ajna)

Color: Indigo


Essential Oil: Calry, sage, jasmine, rosemary, lemongrass, sandalwood


Herbs/food: Blackberries, purple grapes, cabbage, eggplant.


Physical sign: Headache/migraine, eye, depression, hormonal, sinus.


Existing behind the middle of the forehead and near the pineal gland, our third eye influences our intuition and spiritual insight. It's identified with the colour indigo and opens us up to a greater awareness, psychic senses and spiritual gifts.

Crown chakra (sahasrara)

Colour: White or violet


Essential oil: Chamomile, frankincense, myrrh, juniper, sage


Herbs/food: Beans, rice, water, bland foods


Physical sign: Central nervous system, cerebral, sleep, hair fall, insomnia


The seventh and final chakra is located right at the top of the head. This is the chakra that connects us to higher intelligences such as God, our angels and our spirit guides. This chakra also assists in our ability to raise our consciousness and our enlightenment.
