Signs to look out for

Deciding whether to end a relationship is never easy, but recognising the signs that it’s time to move on can make the decision clearer. Relationships are meant to bring joy, support, and fulfilment, but sometimes they can become a source of unhappiness and conflict. When you start to notice persistent issues that affect your emotional well-being, it’s essential to evaluate whether the relationship is still serving its purpose. From constant unhappiness and trust issues to communication breakdowns and feeling unappreciated, there are several indicators that it might be time to let go.

2/11

Communication breakdown

Effective communication is the foundation of any healthy relationship. If conversations with your partner often lead to arguments and misunderstandings, or if you simply avoid discussing important topics, this is a red flag. When you can no longer express your feelings or concerns openly, it creates an emotional distance that can be hard to bridge. A relationship without open communication is unlikely to thrive.

3/11

Growing apart

As people grow and evolve, it’s natural for relationships to experience shifts. However, if you and your partner are moving in different directions—whether it’s in your values, interests, or life goals—it can lead to an emotional disconnect. When you no longer share excitement for each other’s growth or have little in common, it may indicate that you’re growing apart.

4/11

You no longer look forward to seeing them

One of the most telling signs that it may be time to end a relationship is when you no longer look forward to spending time with your partner. If you find yourself ignoring their calls or messages, or feeling anxious about seeing them, it’s a signal that something is off. Ask yourself why you’re distancing yourself. If you’re seeking emotional connection from others instead of your partner, you may already be moving on without realising it.

5/11

Repeated abuse-- physical, emotional or mental

If you repeated fall into the pattern of being abused by your partner-- be it physical, emotional or mental-- despite fighting with them, warming them and setting boundaries, then it might be better for you both to part ways. Abuse, in any form, should not be tolerated for any reason in a relationship.

6/11

Different expectations

Expectations can be a challenging hurdle in relationships, and when you and your partner don’t share the same outlook on important aspects of life—such as future goals, commitment levels, or even daily habits—it can lead to friction.

7/11

Feeling unappreciated or unsupported

In a fulfilling relationship, both partners should feel valued, respected, and supported. If you’re constantly feeling overlooked or that your emotional needs are not being met, it’s a sign that your partner may no longer be as invested. Feeling unappreciated or emotionally abandoned over time can wear down the relationship and leave you questioning whether it’s worth continuing.

8/11

Repeated patterns of conflict

Every couple argues, but when the same issues repeatedly lead to unresolved conflict, it becomes emotionally draining. Constant fighting, without any real resolution or change, often signals deeper issues that neither partner is willing or able to fix. If the pattern of arguments is toxic and cyclical, it might be time to reconsider the relationship.

9/11

You can’t picture a future together

A key indicator that a relationship is reaching its end is when you can no longer see a future together. If you can’t imagine taking important steps, like moving in, getting married, or starting a family with your partner, it may be a sign that your connection is weakening. When the idea of a shared future feels uncertain or distant, it’s time to reflect on whether the relationship still aligns with your life’s direction.

10/11

Feeling drained or exhausted

Being in a relationship should feel uplifting, fulfilling, and enriching. If your relationship starts to feel otherwise, leaving you drained, exhausted, and incredibly frustrated, take it as a sign that it’s time to end your relationship. A relationship should always be based on wanting to be together, enjoying each other’s company, and immersing yourself in love for each other, and so if it doesn’t make you or your partner this way, then there’s no point in being in one.

11/11

Manipulative and controlling behaviour

If you notice that your partner is constantly controlling and manipulating you in order to get their way in everything, then your relationship might be doomed. Notice how they react when you share your view point. If they disrespect you after repeatedly being told, then it might be high time to break your relationship with them.
