5 mindset shifts to overcome a difficult past

Everyone goes through times that change them. It might be losing someone loved, failing at something worked hard for, being hurt by someone trusted, or feeling like life keeps pushing them down again and again.

In those moments, it can seem impossible to move forward. Each day feels heavy. Others seem to smile and carry on, making it hard to understand why it feels so different inside. There may even be a wish to go back to the person who existed before it all happened.

But the truth is– pain changes people. And sometimes, that change can be good. It can bring more kindness, strength, and self-awareness. It can reveal strength that was never noticed before. Pain can be used to heal, to grow, and to move from simply surviving to living with greater strength than ever.

Here are five simple ways to turn pain into strength.

2/6

Don’t hide what’s being felt

When something hurts, it’s easy to pretend everything is fine. A smile is put on, “I’m okay” is said, even when the heart feels heavy. But keeping it all inside only makes the pain grow. Crying, talking to someone, or writing down feelings can help. Allowing emotions to be felt fully can take away some of the pain’s power.

3/6

Look for the lesson, even if it’s hard to see

Every hard experience carries a lesson, even if it’s not obvious at first. It might reveal who the real friends are, teach patience, or show what truly matters in life. Shifting the question from “Why did this happen to me?” to “What can be learned from this for the future?” can change how the situation is seen.

4/6

Put pain into action

Pain builds up a lot of energy. Instead of letting it turn into anger or hopelessness, that energy can be channelled into something meaningful. Exercising, painting, starting a small project, or learning something new can help create a sense of progress. Even small steps can make things feel lighter and more manageable.

5/6

Stay close to those who make things feel safe

No one has to face difficult times alone. Being around people who care, listen, and bring back a sense of comfort can make a difference. It could be family, friends, or even supportive communities online. Sometimes, simply knowing someone understands makes the weight easier to carry.

6/6

Remember past strength

Think back to difficult times that once felt impossible to get through– but were overcome. Challenges in the past were faced and survived. That is proof of strength. Keeping those memories in mind can bring courage on the days when everything feels too heavy.
