One of the most important festivals of the Southern Indian state
Kerala,
Onam, is celebrated wth great enthusianm and joy by Keralites across the world. Also called the "festival of harvest", Onam generally falls in the month of Chingam as per the Malayalam calendar, which falls in August or September in the Gregorian calendar. But beyond being a harvest festival, Onam is a culturally rich festival-- it is deeply rooted in mythology, and symbolises prosperity and unity.
The story behind Onam
The origins of Onam lie in the legend of King Mahabali, a generous and just ruler who was deeply loved by his people. His reign is remembered as a golden era of peace and prosperity, where inequality and injustice did not exist. However, the gods grew concerned about his rising influence and sought Lord Vishnu’s help. Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar (the dwarf Brahmin), visited Mahabali and asked for three paces of land and Mahabali happily obliged. With two steps, Vamana covered the heavens and the earth, and for the third, Mahabali offered his head. Pleased with his devotion, Vishnu granted Mahabali permission to visit his people once a year. Onam celebrates this annual homecoming of the beloved king Mahabali.

Significance of Onam
The significance of Onam extends beyond mythology. It reflects the agrarian roots of Kerala and marks the time of harvest when the land is green and abundant.
Apart from this, Onam is also a reminder of Kerala’s cultural values like-- unity, equality, and gratitude. The festival also brings together people of different faith and communities in Kerala, as they join in its celebration, making it a symbol of harmony.
How is Onam celebrated?
Onam is a 10 days festival, with each day holding special meaning. Homes are decorated with Pookalam (rangoli made of flowers) to welcome King Mahabali. Traditional feasts, known as Onasadya, are prepared and served on banana leaves. It includes a variety of vegetarian dishes which symbolise abundance and togetherness. Cultural performances such as Kathakali, Pulikali (tiger dance), and Thiruvathira (women’s dance) are also performed and they showcase Kerala’s rich artistic heritage. One of the most iconic events is the Vallamkali or snake boat race, where longboats rowed by teams glide swiftly through rivers.
