Arranged marriages are not made in heaven, they are made by desirable complexion and pay packages: 7 people share their experience

Reasons why some Indians reject an arranged marriage proposal

Arranged marriages in India are a peculiar and complicated process. People look for a ‘soulmate’ to happily spend their life with, but they also have a certain set of unique expectations from the prospective bride or groom. Whether it is six-figure monthly salary or the colour of the complexion, many reject an arranged marriage proposal for weird reasons. Seven people open up about the frivolous reasons for they faced rejection in an arranged match for marriage.

He expected me to cook lavish meals every day

“I met the prospective groom and his parents, and they seemed pretty decent. After conversing for an hour, the man told me that he expected his wife to cook for him just like his mother every day. And what does his mother cooked for him? Four meals every day depending upon what he craved to eat that day, including different deserts for each meal. I explained that I have a job and would be returning home by eight in the evening. Unlike his mom who’s a homemaker, I won’t be able to cook lavish meals. Hence, I got rejected for not being homely enough and not keeping up with his unrealistic expectation level. ”

The length of my hair

“I had short hair and the prospective groom’s mother rejected me because my haircut won’t go well with traditional outfits. I won’t look good in a sari as I don’t have waist-length hair. I am glad that his family rejected me or else I would have done the same.”

Too modern for my family

“I met this man on a matrimonial site and we started talking. Everything was going on well until I shared that I love partying and going to pubs on weekends. He got offended and sternly said that I was too modern for his family.”

Because I was not an MBA and the girl was

“Even though I was earning well enough to support a family, the girl made me feel ‘academically inferior’ because she was an MBA and I was not. I am a graduate from one of the best engineering colleges of the country but she felt I won’t be able to climb the corporate ladder because of my ‘low’ educational qualification. I threw her a sly smile and wished her luck for her career ahead.”

6/8

Because I might turn bald after 10 years

“This happened a few months back. I have a normal hair growth but a girl somehow felt I would turn bald within next ten years because my father was bald. Therefore, my hairline which might recede after a decade was the reason for my rejection. I was amused thinking how someone could reject me for such a frivolous reason.”

We did not attend them properly

“I met a prospective groom on a matrimonial site and we decided to know each other better before involving our parents. We got along really well, and his parents visited my home to see me. We both liked each other and thought our parents would talk about our marriage, traditions, rituals etc. But to my surprise, his family got offended because apparently, they believed they were not treated well at my place. We had made all the extravagant arrangements (think all kinds of snacks, followed by a six-course lunch and gifts) to welcome them but they felt we did not pamper them much. Unfortunately, we both had to part our ways.”

I was rejected for my wheatish complexion

“I have a wheatish complexion and the guy had a fair skin tone. So, he said no to the marriage proposal because he only wanted ‘kids with fair complexion’ and marrying me would have ruined his dream. I thank my stars we did not end up together.”
