Answer these 7 questions to know if you are ready to get married or not?

To be, or not to be...

We all go through this phase of ‘to be, or not to be’. And the most famous (if not notorious) is the confusion of ‘to be in a relationship, or not to be in a relationship?’ Once we make-up our mind, we are happy to enter into a commitment with the person we are in love with. Alas! our happiness does not last long because then comes the next phase of the Hamletian (yes, Hamlet is the character in one of Shakespeare’s famous plays who gave us this now famous ‘to be, or not to be’ phrase!) dilemma—should you get married or not?

Honestly, this is one of the most difficult decisions of our life. Before we take the plunge, we need to think twice, thrice or a millionth times—still nothing prepares us to arrive at a conclusion. To help you overcome this dilemma, we bring to you seven questions, which will resolve your confusion a little bit and help you come to a conclusion:

2/8

Are you ready to share all your passwords?

Ah! This is the most difficult one. Letting your partner have the passwords of all your accounts—including WhatsApp, Facebook and your phone’s password (yes, we mean it!)—is like letting them sneak a peek at your soul whenever they want to! If you are ready to do so, it means you trust that person with your life and you are ready to take your relationship to the next level.

Can you do the most random and embarrassing thing?

We call it the ‘fart test’. You are ready to take the plunge, if you can fart in front of your partner and never feel embarrassed! This may sound gross, but we can only do embarrassing or socially awkward things in front of a person when we share a very close relationship, both emotionally and physically, and consider them as our ‘other half’, which is just a teeny-weeny bit away from being a ‘better half’.

4/8

Can you let your partner answer your mother’s call?

This is the mother of all tests! Even married couples are not very comfortable talking to their spouse’s parents. And if your partner can answer your mother’s call and talk with her for hours, consider yourself lucky. No matter how comfortable you are with your partner, it is equally important that he or she should be comfortable with your parents as a well (and the same holds true for you). Marriage not only establishes a lifelong relationship between two persons, but it also brings two families closer. If you answered yes to this question, what are you waiting for?

Are you ready to lend money without expecting any return?

Ah! This, my friend, is a very critical situation. Finance can easily become the biggest bone of contention between two individuals. For example, if you lend money to your best friend, wouldn’t you expect him to return it to you some day? Now, think about this: Suppose, you lend money to your mother (or your father), would you expect him or her to return that to you? For the first question, you might have answered an 'yes' even without flinching. But you might have definitely paused and pondered before answering the money-related question about your parents. This is because, we share such a strong bond with them that nothing can falter it. Similarly, if you are contemplating to marry a person, don’t forget to ask this question!

6/8

Are you comfortable with each other’s nakedness?

This is for those who had been in a relationship for a long time and had shared physically intimate moments. Being comfortable with a person and being comfortable with his or her nakedness are two different things. A lot of people are not very confident about their bodies. Some might fear that they are too fat, while the rest will worry about their reed-thin frames. There is no vulgarity in being naked, and if you can accept a person (or the other person accepts you) with all their frailties, you have reached a milestone.

7/8

Will your family accept your partner’s food habits?

This sounds trivial and you might be wondering, “How is a person’s food habits remotely related to the life changing decision called marriage?” Let us tell you the story of Archana, a Bengali brahmin girl, whose love for a bowl of ‘macher jhol’ was highly appreciated and admired by her boyfriend Ayush, a Tamil brahmin (and a strict vegetarian!). But things changed after marriage and there came a point when she almost threatened to leave him. Reason? Ayush’s mother had never cooked non-vegetarian dishes in her kitchen, as a result of which Archana had to lead a ‘fishless’ life. Let’s not explain it further. Food is as important as love, and you need to sort out any food-related differences before taking the plunge.

8/8

Are you ready to share household and financial responsibilities?

Irrespective of whether you a man or a woman, are you ready to share household chores or financial responsibilities? We have a misconception that only women need to do household chores while the menfolk work outside to bring home money! This is as far from the truth as Pluto (do we even call it Pluto these days?) is from the sun! Financial and household responsibilities are not meant for one person alone. If you are ready to share the responsibilities, you are almost ready to tie the knot.
