Is stress normal during teenage years?

The teenage stage of life has been classified as the exciting, energetic, and potential stage, but it has also been overwhelming. Most teenagers feel stress even when what seems to be “normal” is happening in their lives. From school to puberty, stress has become the silent plague of the teenage years. While stress occurs from time to time when living through the experience of growing up, understanding the causes of stress and when stress can become problematic needs to be known to parents and teenagers.

2/6

The teenage brain is still developing

One major reason stress is common in teenagers is brain development. The teenage brain is still growing, especially the part responsible for decision-making, emotional control, and stress management. At the same time, emotions are intense due to hormonal changes. This imbalance can make teens feel overwhelmed easily. Situations that seem manageable to adults may feel emotionally heavy to teenagers because their coping systems are still under construction.

3/6

Academic pressure plays a big role

School is also among the major sources of stress among youth. Factors such as test anxiety, grades, competition, and pressure from parents and teachers contribute to this stress. These sources of stress are likely to keep stress levels high for most youth. Most youth may fear failing or live up to the high expectations demanded of them by others. Capable youth are also likely to experience stress concerning their future.

4/6

Social and peer pressure adds emotional weight

Friendships, fitting in, and acceptance are highly valued for teens. The fear of being rejected, bullied, and compared, especially on social media platforms, can heighten stress. Teens generally feel their self-worth is measured by what their friends feel about them and their popularity. Feeling connections and belonging while trying to figure friendships and identity can put teens in emotional turmoil, despite issues not being openly discussed.

5/6

Hormonal changes exacerbate stress reactions

Puberty involves significant hormonal changes which influence feelings, energy, and moods. Such hormonal changes can render adolescents highly sensitive to stressful situations, and they might feel they are unable to control their emotions. Adolescents may find it difficult to cope even with minute issues. The hormonal changes can also influence sleep and render an adolescent fatigued, thereby making them increasingly stressed.

6/6

Stress is normal—But balance matters

Some level of stress in the teen years can actually help, as it teaches them resilience. Chronic levels of stress, however, can actually impair physical and emotional functioning. Symptoms of chronic stress can include withdrawal, insomnia, mood swings, and an inability to perform daily activities. Communication, support, healthy habits, and encouragement can help students combat stress and grow up to become emotionally fortified individuals.
