How to react when your child is dating somebody

Teen having a crush or getting into a romantic relationship with someone is an absolutely normal aspect of the adolescent. With the changes in the hormonal flow during these periods of development, teens normally engage themselves into adventurous activities or relationships. But the question is how should a parent react to such things. Well, humans tend to adapt and learn different things with time and experience. While as a parent you should not just set dating rules and regulations but should be frank and guide towards the right path. Teach them to balance out every relationship while still focusing on the sports activities and the studies. You necessarily need not to showcase yourself as too shocked or uninterested, the first time when your child announces about dating, but instead be calm, so that he/she finds you comfortable to share his feelings. This would ultimately help you to guide and counsel them better.

Here are certain points you should consider whenever your child has a crush or romantic relationship.

2/6

Acceptance

Even though you keep your child restricted or confined from such things, it will still happen, however if you will carry such an overprotectiveness and annoyance, they might never share their dating reality. Better, try accepting this, since teenage romance is real! Your child would hence find you warm to share all his feelings or heartbreaks etc. and then only you can console or help accordingly.

3/6

Dating rules

You should primarily set certain dating rules for your kid without being way too strict or dominating. Teach them to provide equal time for every activity. Like your child should mandatorily complete his assignments or project before going out with somebody. He/she should not become ignorant to his/her hobbies. While educating them to spend time with everyone in the family and engage into constructive conversations as well.

4/6

Be vigilant

Being vigilant does not mean to be overprotective or doubtful all the time. You just need to analyse from your child’s behaviour whether he is in a healthy or vicious relationship. If your child is constantly being hurt and emotionally weak, he/she definitely needs help. You need to find out if he’s being prey to peer pressure, bully or unusually missing out classes. In such a case your child seriously needs a counselling.

5/6

Communicate

In a random evening tea-time conversation with your kid, you can talk to them about the complex nature of love. Educate them about respecting everyone involved, dealing with rejections, or heartbreak. Teach them to never blindly follow somebody or be ignorant to vital things happening around. School them to be practical and set goals in order to achieve success in life.

6/6

Sex education

Sex might not be a part of relationship at such a tender ager but it is always better to educate your child for something inevitable. They might get experimental with their sexual behaviours and cravings at that stage, hence teaching them about contraception, STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), and dealing with unwanted sexual pressure. At such an age they should very well know their limits to draw a line between different things, when in a relationship.
