6 struggles of being the younger sibling

6 struggles of being the younger sibling

Being the younger sibling may sound like an easy ride, but anyone who’s lived through it knows it’s practically a survival sport. From hand-me-downs that belonged to three generations to being the default “baby” of the house even at age 20, younger siblings experience a hilarious mix of love, chaos, and mild injustice on a daily basis. While older siblings claim they paved the way, the younger ones quietly juggle expectations, comparisons, and constant teasing. Here are six very real, very relatable struggles every younger sibling knows too well.

2/7

The eternal hand-me-down wardrobe you never asked for

Younger siblings rarely get the luxury of owning something brand new. From oversized school uniforms to sweaters that look like they travelled from the 90s, everything is passed down with the faint promise of “still good!” Even toys, bicycles, and textbooks arrive pre-used and pre-dented. While older siblings enjoyed first pick, younger ones learned early on to “adjust.” Yet, this struggle also gives them a superpower—turning anything old into something cool, purely through confidence and creativity.

3/7

Being forever labelled ‘the baby’ of the family

No matter how old you get, jobs, degrees, and responsibilities included, you are still treated like the tiniest member of the household. Parents double-check everything you do, relatives pinch your cheeks during festivals, and older siblings insist on giving unsolicited advice. Even at 25, you’ll hear, “Aww, look at the baby all grown up!” This constant label is both annoying and secretly comforting, as younger siblings always have someone fussing over them… whether they like it or not.

4/7

Getting blamed for things you definitely did not do

A mysterious cookie disappears? Must be the younger sibling. Someone breaks a glass? Definitely the younger sibling. The older one forgot homework? Somehow still the younger sibling’s fault. Younger children quickly learn the art of defending themselves, negotiating, and occasionally crying for justice. Although unfair, this constant blame game builds incredible diplomatic skills, useful in school debates and future boardrooms. And yes, younger siblings never forget these moments.

5/7

Having to put up with endless teasing and pranks

Older siblings come with a built-in entertainment package, some fun, some slightly traumatising. From silly nicknames to jump scares, they never miss a chance to test the younger one’s patience. While these pranks often lead to dramatic meltdowns, they also mean endless laughter, inside jokes, and memories you’ll cherish later. Younger siblings develop thick skin, great humour, and the ability to roast back with twice the fire, skills that make them fun to be around.

6/7

Living under the shadow of the ‘perfect’ older sibling

The oldest often gets praised for being responsible, disciplined, or academically strong… leaving the younger sibling to hear lines like “Why can’t you be more like them?” Comparing report cards, talent shows, and behaviour becomes a routine family sport. Though frustrating, this struggle pushes younger siblings to carve out their own identity, be it in creativity, humour, sports, or sheer charm. Over time, they learn to stand out in their own way instead of trying to match someone else’s footsteps.

7/7

Having to grow up faster because rules change for you

Parents experiment with the first child, but by the time the younger sibling arrives, many rules are “updated” or “relaxed.” Ironically, this means younger siblings watch their older ones do things they aren’t allowed to, yet end up being scolded more when they try the same. Because of this, younger siblings quickly become sharp observers, smart negotiators, and experts at navigating household loopholes. It’s a struggle… but also a secret superpower.
