5 things not to tell your teenager when they share about their first love

A teenager opening up about their first love is a tender, vulnerable moment, one that can either strengthen your relationship with them or shut down future conversations. While parents often respond with the best intentions, certain comments can make teens feel dismissed, embarrassed, or misunderstood. Here are five things you shouldn’t say when your teenager shares their first romantic feelings, along with what you can do instead.

2/6

“I knew this would happen” or “I warned you about relationships.”

These “I told you so” reactions usually come up when your teen is hurt or heartbroken. But they only add shame to an already painful experience. Resist the urge to be right; your teenager needs support, not a lecture. A more compassionate approach is simply to be present: “I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’m here for you.”

3/6

“Let me talk to them (or their parents).”

Jumping into problem-solving mode too quickly can make your teen feel like you’re taking over their personal life. Unless there’s a genuine safety concern, inserting yourself can undermine their sense of independence and confidence. Instead, encourage them to think through what they want to do: “What do you feel is the best next step?”

4/6

“You’re too young to know what love is.”

This phrase instantly invalidates their feelings. While teenage love may not look like adult love, it’s still real and powerful to them. Telling them they’re “too young” makes them less likely to trust you with personal experiences in the future. Instead, acknowledge the significance of what they’re feeling. You might say, “It sounds like this person is really special to you. Tell me more.”

5/6

“It’s just a phase, you’ll get over it.”

Even if you know from experience that most first loves don’t last forever, your teen doesn’t feel that way. Hearing that their emotions are temporary can feel belittling. What they need is empathy, not predictions. Try responding with something like, “First relationships can feel intense. How are you feeling about everything?” This keeps the door open for communication.

6/6

“Don’t let this distract you from school.”

While it’s reasonable to care about academics, using this line in the moment can signal that you care more about performance than their emotional world. It can come across as dismissive or controlling. Better to acknowledge their feelings first and bring balance into the conversation later. An alternative might be, “I know relationships can take a lot of energy—let me know if you ever want help managing everything.”
