Easy tips to deal with morning sickness during pregnancy

The feeling of having a baby in your womb can be overwhelming. From feeling joyous about nurturing life to dealing with insomnia, swollen ankles and morning sickness, the nine months of pregnancy are no less than a roller coaster ride.

Morning sickness during pregnancy is extremely common and usually subsides in most women with the end of the first trimester. But it's absolutely normal unless you have any severe symptoms like unremitting vomiting, significant weight loss or dehydration.

Contrary to its name, morning sickness can last all day for some women. Morning sickness occurs in over 50 per cent of women who become pregnant.

2/9

Why does it happen?

During pregnancy, the feeling of nausea becomes too common because of the increase in estrogen levels, low blood sugar and greater susceptibility to some smells.

If your symptoms are not too extreme, you can try some home remedies to ease the discomfort. But if your symptoms are severe and home remedies are not working, you can ask your doctor to prescribe you medicines.

3/9

Safe home remedies to try

Rest rest rest

It's very important to get good night's sleep or maybe a nap during the day. Do not go to sleep right after the meals as that can increase the feeling of nausea.

4/9

Eat smaller and frequent meals

In some cases, not eating can make nausea worse. To avoid having an empty stomach, try smaller and frequent meals instead of three large meals each day. You can keep some plain biscuits, dry bread and cereal next to your bed so that you can eat some as soon as you wake up, to avoid nausea.

5/9

Have some ginger

Studies say that ginger can help soothe an upset stomach. You can chew on some ginger, try ginger tea or ginger candy to reduce the feeling of nausea.

6/9

Skip certain foodss

Avoid eating fatty, greasy, excessively sweet and foods that can cause bloating. This is not the time to try new foods. In many women, high protein, high carb and salty foods can cause nausea. Avoid having your drinks along with the food as the combination is said to increase the feeling of nausea.

7/9

Avoid strong smells

One of the easiest things you can do is to avoid strong smells. Stay away from cigarette smoke, perfumes and anything else that affects you. When it comes to cooking, see if someone else can do it for you. Open the windows or use exhaust while cooking.

8/9

Don't forget to take your prenatal vitamins

The iron in your prenatal vitamins can exacerbate nausea. Take your prenatal vitamins at bedtime, instead of taking them in the morning. Talk to your doctor if your iron supplements are causing nausea because skipping is not an option.

9/9

Try aromatherapy

Though yes, certain smells can trigger nausea, but on the flipside smelling mint, lemon and orange can help alleviate nausea. You can keep some cotton balls with aroma oils sprayed on it near you to reduce nausea.
