Woman gives birth to two babies in two days: Know more about this rare birth

For 32 year old Kelsey Hatcher, it was double joy when she gave birth to two babies in two days by undergoing a total of 20 hours of labour. Delivering the miracle babies in "one in a million" pregnancy, Hatcher shared the news on social media and hailed the medics as incredible.

Hatcher gave birth to two daughters at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital, BBC reported. The newborn sisters, Roxi and Rebel, are fraternal twins- with separate birthdays- on December 19 and 20.

How did this happen?

This double pregnancy happened due to a medical condition called uterus didelphys. This is also known as double uterus, is a congenital uterine anomaly where a woman is born with two separate uteri, each with its own cervix and sometimes a double vagina. This condition occurs during embryonic development when the Müllerian ducts, which give rise to the female reproductive organs, fail to fuse properly.

In individuals with uterus didelphys, the presence of two uteri is often accompanied by a duplication of other reproductive structures, such as the cervix and vagina. Women with this condition may have normal reproductive functions, including ovulation and menstruation, but they may face challenges in fertility and pregnancy. Complications can arise during pregnancy, such as a higher risk of preterm birth and breech presentation, due to the limited space within each uterus.

Diagnosis of uterus didelphys is typically made through imaging studies, such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Treatment depends on individual circumstances and may include addressing associated issues like reproductive difficulties or managing complications during pregnancy. Despite the anatomical variations, many women with uterus didelphys lead healthy lives with appropriate medical management and support.

As per Kelsey’s obstetrician, Shweta Patel, M.D., assistant professor in the UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, while it is not uncommon to have a baby in one uterus, but having a baby in both — also known as a dicavitary pregnancy — is an estimated one-in-a-million chance. Hatcher had three pregnancies earlier.


“It seems appropriate that they had two birthdays, though. They both had their own ‘houses,’ and now both have their own unique birth stories,” the happy mom told the media.
