The habit of keeping secrets from parents comes to many kids spontaneously

Kids do lie to their parents; it is a fact. Maybe not everyone, but a majority do it. Maybe not forever, but at some point of time kids do feel necessary to hide certain things from their parents.

The habit stems from several factors like strict parents, introverted kid, the degree of severity of the incident which requires it to be concealed and the timing of the incident.

Sometimes it is an emotional decision, kids make in order to let things be the way they are. Once they grow up, kids often do not want to disturb their parents, their dreams, the motive they have, the impression they have built for them.

“I rejected overseas project for my parents”

For 35-year-old Arjun, going abroad for work was the biggest dream. An excellent employee in the office, Arjun was the first choice of the manager for overseas projects.

But suddenly his father’s health deteriorated and his mother could not manage the mental burden. As a result of this, he had to say no to the projects and chose to take projects here in the country.

“When my father asks me about my overseas project and why I haven’t been abroad yet, I smile and say I am not eligible yet,” says Arjun.

“He smiles and asks me to work hard,” he adds.

“I did not have money to buy food, but I did not tell this to my parents”

For 34-year-old Daisy, stepping out of the small town and coming to Delhi was a big deal.

Her middle class family did not want her to go through the hassles of finding a job in a big city and wanted her to take any job available in her town.

“Some days I did not have money to buy food, but I never spoke about it to my parents else they would have asked me to return the same day. To this day I have never told them how difficult it was for me to save money to attend interviews and live with bare minimum food for 4 months,” she says.

“It was my brother who stole the money from dad’s wallet not our servant”

25-year-old Sarika remembers that unfortunate day when she saw her elder brother stealing money from her dad’s wallet.

She did not have the courage to speak against her elder brother back then (not even now).

She recollects how her dad zeroed in on their faithful servant and threw him out of the job and her brother was a silent spectator.

“I did not tell my dad that I broke down before his surgery”

For 30-year-old Aradhya’s father, she was his daring daughter who knew how to handle tough situations.

During his surgery, Aradhya recalls, her father asked her to be with her in the hospital, because she was the bravest and smartest of all his kids.

“However, I broke down the moment he entered the OT. I cried like a baby downstairs and then walked upstairs and met my father as if nothing had happened,” she says.

“I never told my parents about being caught once for malpractice in exams ”

17-year-old Sikta was caught cheating in the exam, an incident she dreads sharing with her parents.

“My friends suggested that I carry small pieces of paper with answers on them. I carried them in my geometry box. I was caught while cheating for the first answer,” she says.

She was taken to the Principal’s office, who was aware of her academic credentials and chose not to report it further.

Sikta, says she failed in the exam for which she was grounded for one month.
