What is an emotionally immature parent like?

The idea of parent is often taken to be someone perfect for their child, but alas, parents are not perfect. Since parents are people too, they are bound to be imperfect and make lots of mistakes. However, the problem may probably arise when the parent’s acts, such as being emotionally immature, starts traumatizing their child.

Many children grow up with an emotionally immature parent or parents and could get emotionally hurt too, carrying their childhood trauma into their adulthood as well, reflected in their behavior, personality and relationships.

Why are some parents emotionally immature?

Experts believe that when a parent is emotionally immature, they are often parenting from a place of their own attachment trauma, early abuse, or rejecting parents.

Many emotionally immature parents could be themselves abused or neglected in their childhood, and do not truly evolve or heal or mature past their own childlike needs and self-centeredness.

Here are 4 types of emotionally immature parents and their possible impact on their children, as they grow up to become adults.

3/6

Controlling parents

Popularly called as helicopter parents, these parents are prone to micromanaging their kid’s life, often demanding them to be perfect all the time. They do not easily forgive the mistakes committed by their child, and could resort to anger and punishment for the same.

Kids raised with this type of parenting style often grow up to be adults who are perfectionists, overachievers, and highly critical of themselves. They may also struggle for external validation to feel worthy.

Emotional (or non-emotional) parents

These parents exhibit a lot of drama and overreaction, not even chilling on their job as a parent. They also have a lot of emotional swings in their relationship with their children. At some point they can get clingy and needy, at another point they can appear cold and distant.

Children raised in such an unpredictable environment with lack of emotional security can become adults who are vulnerable to becoming highly anxious, depressed, or emotionally dysregulated themselves.

5/6

Rejecting

These kinds of parents are not very excited to do their job as a parent. As a result, they may push away their children, who may end up feeling lonely. They can be dismissive or avoidant towards their child’s emotional needs.

Children raised with this type of emotionally immature parent can become adults who have difficulty dealing with connecting with people, including their romantic relationships.

6/6

Negligent or passive

These kinds of parents may appear as too cool or chill as a parent. However, on the darker side, their lack of concern for their child’s well-being can make the child feel neglected or subject to preventable problems.

Being raised by a parent who is negligent can lead to adults who have a lot of contempt for their parent as well as could also have anger or shame toward themselves. They could also be more vulnerable to risks of anxiety, depression, or other mental health diagnoses.
